Ignition switch beeps query

Featured Replies

X reg 1.9TDI Octavia estate.

I bought this at in 2002 and it has always given a regular set of beeps for about 10 secs when the ignition switch is initially turned on to the glow plug position. I Always have taken this to be a reminder to fasten your seat belt, but it was also convenient in the colder weather as a time measure before firing the engine up.

Anyway I had a an argument with a fixed object and pulled the front bumper off. The garage has fixed that, but the beeps have gone away!!! :dull: .

I've been back to discuss it with them (this is an accident repair shop rather than a Skoda agent) and they are a bit mystified as they state they wouldn't have disconnected the battery for a bumper replacement, but then the clock was all wrong when I got it back. Their suggestion is that a door was left open at some point and the battery had run down and they then had to recharge it. OK, that's plausible (and the owner seemed pretty genuine), but then why have the beeps gone and should they be there anyway? -- has some long term fault signal been cleared?

Many thanks for any suggestions

Rob

Does the coolant warning light come on when you turn the key to the 'lamp test' position? Sounds like the beeps you get from a faulty coolant level sensor, but you should also get a flashing light on the dash (which would be lit up red at lamp test).

does the car beep if you turn the ignition on without having your seatbelt done up?

Maybe the argument with the fixed object has freed up the switch in the drivers seatbelt harness as a result of the impact jolt?

Those two answers then initiate the question - if there are no faults then there should be no beeps at all when you operate the ignition switch ? Could it be then that this was a fault code from something from the previous owner that had not been cancelled and I've just assumed for 8 years that it was part of the vehicle design ? Doh !!!

The incident in the car park was that I caught the front bumper over over one of those wooden bar systems that they so often surround country park car-parks with. so there was no impact just a minor bang and bits of bumper coming into view as I reversed out. It was during the garage repair that these bleeps disappeared, and I've been back to complain about my missing bleeps !! :giggle:

Thanks for answering, guys

ECU faults won't generate beeps at ignition on.

Beeps at ignition on can be caused by (he says guessing as the manual is not to hand):

- seatbelt not clipped in

- coolant level low

- fuel level low

- oil level low (maybe?)

- windscreen wash low

- brake fluid low (and maybe a handbrake light on the dash)

These are not stored up for ever - the car checks each time. A serious fault might cause the CEL to illuminate, which would probably log a fault in the ECU. FWIW, my car logs faults, but I have never had the CEL on, maybe the bulb was blown/worn out.... :smirk:

If you update your location field, you might find someone local with a copy of vagcom who will scan your car just to check.....

They should have disconnected the battery if the bodyshop did any welding.

Do all the dash lights come on when you turn the key to the 'ignition on' position?

The airbag system beeps for 10s when part of the system is disabled but you would usually get a dash warning light on.

Follow up to my query and answers.

The vehicle handbook indicates that the bleeps I was looking for are the seat belt reminder - in my age of vehicle this is just a reminder, it is not linked to the safety belt clip; ie if I plug the belt in before truning on the ignition, the 6 secs worth of bleeps still occur.

Anyway - the reason for the follow up, is that magically this morning, a week after collecting the car from the repair shop, the bleeps have returned !! .

Don't ask me why but it is a bit odd all together.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. If you want to carry the thread on, then come up with an explanation for the recovery !.

mmm, My Y (2001) does the seltbelt warning, but only if I have not clipped my belt in. Maybe the switch in the seltbelt "thing" is dodgy.....
