Just bought Top Up Oil but...

Featured Replies

Hi folks..

Been into the local Skoda dealers this morning whilst the car had a reverse sensor replaced.

Only had the car three weeks and thought I'd buy a litre of top up oil seeing as their offers are cheaper than any Shell Petrol Station.

I own a 60 Reg 2.0T FSi petrol Octavia vRS.

I asked the parts dept for some top up oil.

She came back with Helix Diesel-Ultra AR-L 5W-30.

I pointed this out straight away and she apologised and returned to the warehouse.

Two minutes later she came back with the same oil. Stating the mechanics say the petrol & diesel vRS engines use the same oil!

The fully synthetic Diesel Ultra.

Something did'nt seem right but I went along with it.

Surely this can't be for the petrol engine can it? It says diesel all over the bottle.

Have they told me a load of nonsense. :'(

The dealers is a bloody long way away. I'm not going to go all the way back if they have cocked up.

Heres the oil I bought.

Does it say VW504.00 on the bottle?

No nothing of the sort. The only reference I can see is ACEA C4; Renault RN 0720. :wonder:

Needs to be 507.00 oil iirc. It is indeed the same for petrol and diesel but that stuff is for renaults not VW's!

507.00 is for diesel, 504.00 is for petrol (on the Octavia vRS) but most of the VAG spec oils meet both of these.

Hi

When I picked up my Octy 1.4 TSi the dealership told me about a bottle of top up oil in the boot. When I looked it was Castrol GTX with VW507 on the bottle. I took a look at Castrol website and they only recommend that for diesel engines. The correct one according to them and the service/handbook is VW504. As I am on variable servicing and had used the one in the boot I would have had to change to fixed. It might be the dealers trying to get you to use the wong oil and then you have to get a service done at 10K instead of 18K as is my case (according to Maxidot).

Wow, the incompetence of Skoda dealers beggars belief :o

I wouldn't be using that oil then. According to the shell website the only oil they currently make that is 504.00 is : http://www.shell.co.uk/home/content/gbr/products_services/on_the_road/oils_lubricants/shell_helix_tpkg/product_range_new/helix_ultra_extra/

It should state clearly in the handbook only to use oil that meets VAG 504.00 spec.

If you look at that link it says the oil meets both 504.00 and 507.00 - so it is OK for petrol and diesel

It would have been fine as it is a higher spec. My dad used to run 507.00 in his 1.4 Polo as i used to get it free from work...

It's not just for Renaults though is it.

I would say that stuff is. Definately not for yours as it does not meet a VAG spec.

Why would a main Skoda/SEAT franchise sell it if it was'nt suitable for their vehicles.

I made sure before I left the dealers that they gave me the correct oil.

Like I said I even made the lady on the sales counter go into the workshop for a second opinion. And she came back with the same oil.

Plus if I put this in my vehicle and I get engine trouble then I will hold them personally responsible.

Or you could just take it back and get the proper oil for your car.... :wonder:

They will just see that it is Shell Helix Ultra that is 5W30 and assume its right. Doesn't mean they are right though. Perhaps their supplier got mixed up.

They don't even sell the correct Windscreen washer additive that is VAG spec. Only Renault stuff.

Good luck if you try to persue that route!

If you want proper stuff for your VAG engine go to Motor Services (VW Dealer)

Hi mate,

Been trawling the internet for ages over this. Sad I know but I want to ensure I have plenty of knowledge if I am to return this oil back to the dealer.

Seems every oil thats graded 5W-30(Fully Synthetic) meets the VW504/507 requirements. Including the one I purchased.

The only thing that initailly put me off was the huge 'DIESEL' writing on the bottle.

I have'nt found one 5W30 oil out there that does'nt meet VW recommendations.

The Renault specific must be some sort of marketing strategy. I don't know of any oil out there designed for a specific manufacturer. :S

The composition of the oil differs - the oil you've got has been approved to ACEA C4 and Renault RN0720, but VW507 oil is typically ACEA C2/C3. The viscosity between the two may be identical, but there are differences to the composition (C4 requires lower SAPS).

The Skoda warranty is quite specific in stating the type of oil which needs to be used and as this oil doesn't meet that spec (ie. it doesn't have a VW50x.x number written on the side), if you run into engine problems at a later date you may find your claim trickier to pursue - even if the issue itself isn't related to the oil used...

Well according to shell website the oil I purchased meets VW504/507 specifications. Even though it doesn't say it on the bottle.

I think that's the latest name for my oil. I went off the numbers ie 5w30. The ultra is 5w40
