works favorit rally car

Featured Replies

i was reading on some website that the favorit works rally cars had a1300cc with 110bhp. is this possible to do at home with a few spanners and some bolt on parts?

Ive been reading into this and by the sounds there was internal work also so a machine shop would also need employed

The later cars had more like 130bhp; I've seen a dyno plot for a 1.4 mini-kit engine (from my head supplier) which had nearly 150bhp!

What you have to remember is that a lot of the works stuff was "lifed" - I've had an ex-works Felicia engine, and it used standard rods, and they would rev to maybe 8200rpm, but they would replace the rods reasonably often. The same is the case for the 6-speed gearboxes - they are quite expensive to run because the works team would replace parts fairly often; they're not a "fit and forget" item. This is the same with just about all Rally (and no doubt race) stuff - it's the only way to be competitive, especially with the FIA rules being what they are (you have to use original conrods, for instance, whereas replacing them with stronger, lighter items would mean a reliable and stronger bottom end).

If you're not limited by the parts you can use, it should be easy enough to get 100bhp+ - a decent cam, much less restricted inlet (using 40mm carbs or throttle bodies), a better exhaust and manifold (the kit car tubular one is just the ticket, with a 50mm system) and some decent head work should see you there. The standard bottom end is good for 7000rpm without problems. My own setup is limited by homologation issues, so I can only use specific parts (which are expensive, alas!), and it uses a standard throttle body, and was making 99.8bhp, but would make a lot more if it could rev to 8000 - the dyno plot was just going upwards, with constant torque for 1500rpm between 5500 and 7000rpm.

Not sure how much you'd get without changing the cam and doing head work though - there would be some improvement, but nowhere near as much.

I have seen 100bhp with a decent ported head and rally cam using totally std crank and rods and flywheel etc. that engine was used in my road car for around 10K and then went into my stage rally car. they do need a lot of work to keep in top fettle tho I was replacing big end bearings every 2 or 3 rallys (but only with std items @ 50p per shell )

Plus, I will have a couple of heads for sale in the next few weeks, should make the job even easier!
