vRS HID Kit

Featured Replies

Afternoon, All..

I've been having a nosey about for information on HID kits. My girlfriend has an aftermarket kit fitted on her Hyundai Coupe SII (on the car from a dealer, passes MOT's no problem, no random scatter etc) and whenever I get in my Octy, I really notice the difference.

Now, I understand the legalities involved in fitting aftermarket kits, and I'm not wanting to be re-directed to the Department of Transport website, or the totally one-sided argument from Auto Car magazine on YouTube. I'd appreciate it if people would avoid bumping their post count and just not bother with such responses.

I want a set that'll plug straight in, without any modifications to wiring or bulb holders and without flagging up any warnings. Does such a kit exist? I'm wanting to fit some 4 to 6k temp bulbs, white light, none of that blue tint rubbish.

Could any one advise me on such a kit? Should one actually exist..

Cheers,

Keith.

hi Keith i used these people on my old mondeo very good and easy to fit just plug and play.

if you have auto lights you have to tell them and they will send the correct lights for your car.i phoned them to make sure there only in north London

my car past its mot twice with these lights fitted so no need to worry.bill

I have a kit from hids direct,

Power from bat, that powers the ballists, they got leads that go to a h4 direct fit bulb :)

All i done was took a small notch out the bottom of the case/cover that goes on the back of the light so it comes down neat and unnoticed... Went thru mot fine and no lights :)

Iirc its called the canbus pro kit and was only 79 delivered

I fitted a kit to my BMW and my 206cc both went through there mots fine

And really improved the light output

I had HID kits in both my last 2 volvo s40's, but they were seperate lights and dipped and main and passed MOT's for years no problem,

I got a kit for octy and they fitted okay and light pattern was good, but there was alot of glare with them even with modified black headlights and main beam was crap so i took them out and back to candle power for now

As of late 2011, aftermarket HIDs will become an MOT failure (or so I've heard).

However, if you want to go the completely legal route that will pass and MOT...

...however, it's gonna cost a small fortune!

As will remaping your ecu :-(

2008 car up will have there ecu checked as part of the mot and if not as factory set will fail there mot.

was at a famaly mot place and thay confarmed thay this was one of the things vosa was trying to bring in to the mot for late 2011,

I've already looked into this and it is going to cost way too much to implement, however Diesel Tuning boxes will be a fail.

Hmm, some pretty interesting comments. Wasn't aware of the new MOT regulations they're trying to implement.

Still, my MOT isn't til April, so I'd sooner run with HID's over the winter months and revert to standard during summer. Seems like a fair compromise!

I've been having a look at some of the kits available, and would rather avoid connecting a direct power feed to the battery, seeing as I'll be wiring my sub in shortly. Can you connect the ballasts straight to the standard connectors? A friend of mine had to splice an early HID kit into his FTO's loom, something I'd sooner avoid.

Ah, and does the Mk1 Octy run a CANBUS system? :)

Cheers,

Keith.

Its a canbus pro i got mate. Its avoided all lights and funny business:). Also fine with the stereo even with power, im guessing it needs a power source to fire up the ballists,

Where abouts are you mate?

Over here in sunny Teesside..

Yeah, I know a lot of the ballasts require a direct power source, but on my old Supra, you could get kits which were powered directly off the standard loom. Two plug connectors and jobs a good'n.

Also noticed a lot of Bi-Xenon kits. Think I'd rather save the £20 and keep the standard halogen high beam.

Ive fitted a few HID kits and the only place ive found that do a real plug and play for a H4 setup is HIDS4U, most on ebay state plug and play but when they arrive you have to run an extra harness between both lights and the battery. I have fitted one like this in a porsche 944 for a mate but didn't want it in my ocatavia. Ive used HIDS4U a few times and they are more expensive but seem to know there stuff. when I first fitted the octy kit I had a problem with main beam flash on one headlamp, so they sent an alternative harness the same day as said some cars need the other version.

Also another ebay H7 kit i fitted for a mate on a passat blew both bulbs within 6 months my old H7 kit in my previous car was still working fine after 4 years!

Well I've had a nosey on some of the larger websites, but they all charge quite a premium, twice as much as the eBay kits.

Is there any real benefit in opting for the 50w over a 35w kit? I've checked out some of the comparison videos on YouTube, but can't really see much difference.
