Need profeesional opinion from the first hand regarding engine for Yeti

Featured Replies

Greetings to all of you,

As you can see I am a new member , and I signed in because I will hopefully soon become Yeti owner. I know which trim will I take, and extra options(all of them, not leather) but now I have big issue regarding the engine. I cant decide between 1.8T and 2.0 170hp diesel. Can anyone who have this two engines tell me their opinion about them. Which one is better to drive, I saw that both have same 0-60 time, but what about acceleration from for ex. 60-100 and etc.? Which one is sportier? As I will have only this car, which one is better for long term use?

I would like to know does this 2.0 diesel engine have any problems with piezo technology because I know that VW Passat had with 2.0 diesel engine? Have VW fixed this problem?

Please give me some info about this.

P.S. I read about panorama leak issue, is this only one user problem or it is common problem? Have Skoda fixed this?

First question. What is your driving pattern? Urban, rural, motorway?

I live in the country and rarely go into a large city with its slow traffic so the diesel suits me better, lower fuel consumption, low revs for the long haul and plenty of torque. if I lived in suburbia, I would probably go for petrol.

I live in the city, with heavy traffic. I will probably own only this car, so i am in struggle because of fuel consumption, services and similar things. Also how much will I lose when I decide to sell my car? Which one is more fun to drive? I ask this because my stupid dealer have only 2.0 diesel with 110 hp for test car.

Which one is sportier for drive, and overtaking abilities?

Which one is cheaper to run?

Which one had better quality as engine?

Hi SUV fan, and welcome to the Yeti site - loads of information and helpful people, (I hope), to assist you in your decision.

I took my test drive with the dealer in the 1.8 Tsi, and I bought the 170 CR Tdi, so I am able in a small way to compare the two engines.

Both have very similar performance figures, and my impression is that the petrol engine felt more flexible and responsive - but at a cost of much worse fuel economy.

Having bought the 170 TDi I can tell you that it is a very capable engine, excellent for overtaking where it never seems to run out of energy. It is also very economical. I drive 30 miles every day to my work, and this is up and down very steep hills on very small roads, as well as about 5 miles (8Km) of town driving, and 20 miles of good quality main roads. I manage to achieve nearly 45 miles to the gallon.

When driving on the minor roads, with all the bends and hills, the diesel is very agile, and drives like a tall go-kart, sticking to the road extremely well. I cannot fault it at all. The petrol engine (remember I only did a test drive of about an hour - with the dealer sitting beside me!!) felt free -revving, but occasionally felt like it was about to run out of puff. I'm sure it wouldnt, but that was my impression.

In the 170, second and third gears are simply stunning for overtaking, and cover most situations.

The biggest difference will be the running costs, and also the fact that in UK I would expect the diesel to have more value left when you come to sell it.

Either car will put a smile on your face!!!!

George (hoping that this helps!)

The Yeti chassis is so well sorted as standard that I dont think that the differences would actually even matter to which engine was upfront for the above.

If anything Id have to say that was the wrong way round. Theres very little in it but if anything the diesels felt slightly less agile at the front when driving on my local B roads. I'd rather have the low down grunt combined with the ability to rev hard round that you get with the petrol for that sort of driving personally.

Ive driven the 170, 140 and I own a 1.8TSi.

They are all great cars imo but the petrol suits my driving more so. Economy isnt as bad as some diesel owners make out  I get 32mpg on my stop start town commute which is 10 miles each way. At this time of year, the speed with which the petrol Yeti warms up is very welcome and Im also seeing our diesel cars mpg dive at the moment due to the lower temperatures and the additional time needed to warm up! I also felt more vibrations in the cabin with the diesels and they are more audible under harder acceleration.

Ive seen 42mpg on longer runs (I even took a photo for proof!) but that was at a constant 65mph. I havent driven the diesels at high speed but the 1.8TSi sits at 120mph very well - very quitely and feels very stable.

I think when I made the purchase, there was something like a £1200 difference in cost bewteen the 1.8TSi and the 170 and even though I knew I wanted the petrol, I also figured at £1200 buys a lot of additional fuel, helping to offset the diesels better overall mpg ability. Oh and the first service is £90 which I was chuffed with!

As you can tell, im a big fan of the 1.8TSi so any view from is going to be totally biased/ :p :D

Thank you both on your opinion. I also think that Petrol one would suit me more because you see I live in town and there is a lot of start stop movement, also the diesel engine has the DPF filter which can make lot of problem when driven in town, I know because my father has Touareg 2.5 diesel and he has lot of problem regenerating that filter. It is true that diesel has better fuel economy , and it is much easier to sell, but in the other hand it is more expensive(in my country it is 2.500 Euros more) and is more expensive to service.

At winter, the temperature go down even to -17 C degree, start problem , warming up problem and similar.

When I decide to sell it will probably have aprox. 100 000km on counter and probably be 4-5 years old. I will be happy if I get 50% of the price I payed, and I will give aprox. 26000 Euros for it. If i get 12 000 Euros for it I will be satisfied . But if i put in equation that this will be my only car, and that I will use it a lot and change it after 4-5 years with a new one I think it is worth it.

Also I am little a bit sport driver, and I like sound of exhaust, especially petrol one, and Yeti is relatively small car(also it has good way to cheat drivers of sport cars-->rear seats can be taken out and it goes much faster :D). :) For me the most important thing is RELIABILITY of engine, ELASTICITY of engine, QUALITY of engine , and car in total naturally . What is your experience with this?

Does 1.8T engine have some things to especially watch for? Some weak spots?

Does anyone have info about :

60-100km/h for both

best time 0-100km/h for both

Have the Skoda fixed the problem with Panorama, leaking problem? Anyone have this info, or this was non common problem?

Thank you all and I am really happy to become one of Skoda Yeti owners, I can see there are lot of nice drivers here :)

Y'know, this is an interesting debate.

Focus - you make some good points well, and certainly give pause for thought - and I am left thinking, actually, that both engines are damn good, and that it comes down to that indefinable "personal choice" - which of course is what SUV is trying to make!

I think you could be right about the "flexibility" of the petrol. Certainly, to be driven hard a diesel has to be really driven hard!!!!

At the end of it all I suspect there will be very little in it, and I must confess that when I chose the 170 I didn't even stop to consider the petrol at all. Perhaps if I'd read your comments above I too might have opted for the 1.8TSI... ... ... ...

And for me the above sums it up quite nicely in all honestly. : the yeti is a brilliant choice no matter what engine you go for.

Regarding the panoramic roof - if you have read my previous posts on the topic you'll see that one of the initial main appeals of the yeti for me was being able to specify the opening glass roof. It's simply amazing in my opinion.

I've tried as hard as any one could to get it to leak but mine just isn't interested! :p  I even have photos of mine up on ramps (one poster said the incline was a possible cause of one that leaked) with me hosing it and jet washing it down. I've left the hose 'raining' on it for 15 mins and left it pooling and running off again when it was on level ground again and I don't get anything past the roof seals at all. The gutters on mine seem to be well upto the job.

Sorry for bothering with questions again,

Is there anyone who could scan me the service interval from service book, you know the info what has to be checked , changed, and repaired on yeti every service, and it is written for first service, and then every 10 000 miles or 15 000km what have to be done on car. I need this for skoda yeti 1.8T :)

Is there anyone who could provide me this please.

Grateful future owner of yeti 1.8T , probably white color or Storm blue, still dont know :)))

Does anyone have picture of Storm blue ? :) I saw white Yeti and it is really good, but how does Storm blue color look? :)

Thank you everyone for advices and opinions, they helped a lot.

P.S. I asked Honest John about engine for my yeti, he also sad 1.8T is best for fun drive and best from Yetis handling :))) , same sad by Auto express, and car enthusiast-->1.8 described as real gem :)

You need to read Evo magazines reviews of the 1.8 TSi ;) Try a search on here as Ive posted some of it previously.

Id also check the 1.8TSi service schedule info out locally if I was you just to make sure things dont differ between country's and you could also check out costs also - very reasonable here imo.

Check out "Meet Roxy"... by Mr.P She's Storm blue ;)

One more point to add to the debate - if you want the DSG box you can't have either engine. I did and wanted 4WD so had no choice but to go for the 140 diesel - but having read more about the DPFs on here (and as a city driver) I am very apprehensive. Why don't Skoda offer the 1.8 TSi with DSG?

  • Author

Because than Skoda Yeti would totally bury VW Tiguan :D , and I guess that VW dont want to end up like that. :)

Unless you are want a diesel just but the 1.8t!

The 1.8t is an awesome engine and very under rated by VW at 160bhp, it makes upwards of 180bhp and remaps to 220bhp for a few hundred quid.

The Yeti is also 4WD so what you are actually buying here is a detuned GOLF-R!.

I would buy one in a blink of an eye if they sold them in Taiwan!.

Oh did i fail to mention that the 1.8t is just a shorter stroke version of the latest GTI engine?.

It can also receive a K04 turbo swap for over 250bhp :giggle:

So unless you are a black stuff guy and i know alot of you are, there really is no comparison between the diesel and petrol.
