Begin to mod or not?

Featured Replies

Good morning all, had my VRS a fair few months now. Its standard apart from a green filter and refurbed anthracite standard alloys. I love the car in standard form, but i can feel the mod bug starting to grab me! I sold my Impreza P1 to save myself money as the modding bug was taking over my life!lol!

What do you all think, keep it standard or start modding? Im thinking miltek and remap first, then suspension. But in my past experience, more power more problems and i'll never get the money back if i sell it.

Opinions please.

You sold a modded P1, cos it cost too much money,

and now you want to do the same to a lesser car ?

Doesn't make sense dude - should have kept your P1

An un-modded P1 is vastly better than a modded vrs :giggle:

But hay-ho

Start with handling (suspension+arb), then brakes, then engine power

If you are single fine, but if you have a wife and kids it gets harder to justify. One of mine is at uni the second to go so plenty out goings. I cycle 20 mile a day to work ,so can justify spending money I have saved on fuel on the car. I must admit when you start you find it hard to stop. Even styling, someone puts up a link for led bulbs so you replace them all, then the headlamp bulbs because they are yellow in comparison, then chrome rings around your dials etc etc :giggle::thumbup:

DO NOT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! emoticon-0145-shake.gif

I sometimes wish i hadn't sold it snow muncher, but i just couldnt justify it. I know the vrs will never come close to the P1. There just different leagues. I appreciate what your saying and i know your right, need to hear more to stop myself wasting my money. Think i just miss the power lol!!!!!!

How much money do you want to waist and how much agro do you want???

I certainly wouldnt go that far, i think you are helping me realise modding the VRS isnt a good idea. I stand by my Wales write up, the VRS is a good car in standard form and a fun one too. If i want more power i'll buy a more powerful car thats faster out of the box and save my pennies for something else.

Wise words.

Your money your choice at the end of the day. Do it if you feel you must.

Tyre choice is critical along with thicker rear anti roll bar.

I fitted Toyo T1R's when i bought it and i think fitting the RARB would be a good idea, but thats where it will stop.

Its' all about knowing where to draw the line.

Uprating the handling, braking and stage 1 map aren't too expensive, and do radically improve the car.

This being done, it does put the vRS on a comparable footing to the best FWD cars, at less overall cost.

A good stage 1 remap will transform the car.

agree, stage 1 map and the suspension and arb's will transform the car without costing an arm and a leg :giggle:

as above a remap is a must should have come out the box with 230 bhp handles the power ok to be honest

Sounds like youv'e already started, reading this site doesn't help, someone does something, and before you know it BAM, the modding bug has hit youemoticon-0144-nod.gif

Mine was going to stay standard after spending £7k on my Vectra, thought not doing that again, found this site, paid Awesome a visit and what happens little tweeks keep happening. Luckily money is a bit tight so i've not gone daft YETemoticon-0140-rofl.gif

In the 3 years i owned the P1 i spent near 10K. The mod bug is addictive but very costly. I sold the P1 and bought the VRS with my girlfriend as cheap everyday car, the P1 was my weekend toy. I may just wait until next year and get something 350bhp plus again, i do miss the shove of the P1.

... wait until next year and get something 350bhp plus again ...

That is the most sensible plan. Make sure its 4x4 as well.

The vRS will always be just a front wheel drive car - even with 1,000s' spent on a LSD & the best coilover/arb setup, it can't touch a 4x4 - not with large amounts of power anyway.

If you're willing to go down the £10K+ modding route again, the 4x4 is better option than the vRS.

Given the fall in prices of jap kit, and more tasty VAG stuff (2.7 bi-turbo S4 for example) falling in price too .... not sure I'd go down the MK.4 platform route again.

Not strictly true, have been in a very fast (previously mentioned) vrs (cheers Des) and that handles as a good fwd car should even with lots and lots of power.

Key is the right handling mods and a diff/atb

Ok on a wet day, 4x4 wins, on a track though....on a dry day i'm not so sure...

I said keep my car standard then I joined this website and my sig says it all.

I have had 3 scoobies(modified most of them) and a number or Fast Ford RS's including cosy's and I think what ever i drive it would be modified. If I become a pensioner i bet i would mod the mobility scooters :giggle:

The VRS is in a different league but that does not make it a bad car, far from it. I have owned the VRS longer than any other car i have had, and it still ticks more boxes than most other cars.

You can certainly improve the VRS with not breaking the bank.

My next car would probably be a S4 if funds allow, at the moment i still smile driving the VRS.

Not strictly true ...

You're just sore 'cos you had two good 4x4's (octy and A6) and now only have half a car :giggle:

K7 VRS has owned a P1, so I'm sure can make his own judgement as to the value of 4x4, and the comparison between FWD and AWD

lol, whatever...... :D

Don't underestimate the fwd is all im saying...

done properly they can show up the best of them

I find the VRS a great car i had celica GT4 ST205 before my VRS..... even with 300bhp and 4x4 i find the VRS a better car and a set of coilovers really does change the car completely , my opinion mod it!! decent suspension re-map stage one carbonio induction kit good exhaust and you'll be actually suprised at what it can do against cars with 300+ bhp :p

Don't underestimate the fwd is all im saying...

I did say in a earlier post on this thread that the vRS can be one of the best FWD,

I was really saying in later postings, is that if you're going for serious bhp, then there are better platforms than vRS.

well there is always a better car out there as a basis for tuning,

seeing as the vrs is one of the cheapest performance cars out there, i would say as a base vehicle actually its one of the best, and costs a lot less to do than the 4x4 or one of the more expensive vag offerings!

Dont get me wrong, i love the 4x4 and 4x4 in general, but i still recon round a track a well setup vrs will be quicker than a big fat heavy 4x4 ;)

LOL!What have i started!

The VRS is a great basis for modding, but i never bought mine with the intention of modding it.

My P1 did 4.6secs to 60 and 13.3secs to 100 out of the box, mine was far from standard and it would certainly be quicker than those figures. I played with quite a few cars in the 3 years i owned it and the P1 destroyed them, especially in the twisty bends where the 4wd and engines low centre of gravity inspired confidence. It could be driven as hard in the wet as it could in the dry. Could a 300bhp fwd vrs do the same, i dont know. Fwd has its limits,if you cant get the power down effectively then its pointless to me.All this is just imho ;)
