Sourcing winter tyres

Many people have mentioned the size 205/55R16 on this thread...

Can I ask why that is, as the size 205/60R16 seems to be much closer to the same diameter as the Dunlops our SE came on?

Otherwise they are about 4% too small I think.

Hi CT17,

the 205/55 R16 is one of the two official winter tyre sizes listed for the Yeti (205/50 R17 being the other). However there's nothing wrong with fitting winter versions of the OEM size.

Regard the 205/60 R16, this is not mentioned in any official literature, however survey has recently received an e-mail from SUK stating it's fine to use this size for winter tyres as well.

Hope that helps,

TP

The 205/55/16 worked for me as it was available, at a good price and fitted my secondhand alloys and also my existing set of autosocks, not to mention Skoda said they were okay as TP posted.

After a talk last hight we have decided either the Skoda is getting sensible (not the dunlops) tyres or going... Going to try the tyres first and if that doesn't work it's option 2. Going to order some 205/60R16 Goodyears (as my wife likes the speedo to be correct)and wait for a long time. Which is not unusual for a Skoda owner. ;)

It may not get used for any great distances, but needs to be usable when we need it.

Having only had 4x4s for many years I was shocked by just how bad it was in the snow, even compared to some other FWD cars. Standard tyres certainly do it no favours.

Interestingly when I called the local Skoda dealer in Aberdeen for price/delivery details for a spare set of Dolomite alloys the guy in the Parts dept asked for my registration no. and said that the computer was showing an option of "16inch steel wheels for winter tyres" for my car. This is in apparent contradiction to what Skoda UK told me a few weeks ago in that they could only 'approve' the OEM wheels and tyre sizes for the car and to fit anything else could invalidate the warranty. Less interestingly, they quoted £201 per wheel (vs £146 in the accessories brochure).

Thanks TP

Hi,

Goodyear 4 Season (with snowflake symbol) are available in 225/50 R17 and the Nokian eNtyre, although this is more a cold / wet weather all season tyre with some snow performance.

again hope that helps,

TP

Yes, gone for the Goodyear Vector 4 season (with the snowflake symbol), hopefully they'll be fine in all conditions with the annual milage the vehicle does. Which is rather low.

Let the wait for them begin...

Or rather, let the wait NOT begin. Was using mytyres.co.uk and even though they can't tell me when the tyres will be in stock I need to send cleared funds to a bank account.

Unfortunately we have to inform you that as per company policy we cannot process your order until you transfer the outstanding sum of GBP 465.60 into the following account, remembering to include your order number

Don't do business like that :o so looking for another supplier.

Or just order them online with mytyres now. Having tried initially you should be in their system as a customer now. A second attempt is apparently succesful as they now dont see you a new customer! (According to the posts in the Octavia or Superb forum)

Getting really frustrated with mytyres.co.uk as well.

I ordered online on Monday, spoke to them on Monday pm and they confirmed the tyres I ordered were 'in stock' but have heard nothing from them since.

Got through to their callcentre just now who told me 'we are waiting for authorisation on your credit card'. Spoke to NatWest Mastercard who told me that payment was authorised simultaneously with my online order on Monday and I have been given the authorisation code for the payment. Now trying to speak again with mytyres but their lines are engaged!

I'm going to leave my order open for now as there are no other tyres that I'd want available BUT any more shenanigans and my order/payment will be cancelled. I'm certainly not sending a direct bank payment.

That's all well and good, and a useful tip (thanks) except that the tyres I've ordered are no longer listed available; so I guess they are out of stock!

Got through to mytres; turns out they sent me an e-mail on Tuesday requesting copy of a utility bill (fair enough as its my first order with them and I'm asking for the tyres to be sent to my office) except that it got blocked in my 'junk mail/spam' filter by Yahoo. Now too late for the Vreds I'd ordered as they are out of stock.

However, plenty of Yokohama W.drive 98V in stock, at a similar price to the Vreds, so I've ordered these instead. E-mail has come through to confirm this so I just need to send them a Utility bill later today.

Situation may be rescued.

Hi,

Recently took the plunge for winter tyres and placed order with mytyres on 29thnov.The order went through fine and as far as i was concerned it was a matter of just waiting for the email from them too state an approx delivery date.I checked everyday too see the status of the order and was suprised too discover that the online confirmation was stating awaiting payment from visa ( This took 4 days!!).I have since recieved the delivery date and the courier tracking number and am now just waiting (snow permiting delivery).I have found the service okay and apart from the order going through but the payment pending at the same time i have no issues so far.

After looking elsewhere for 225/50R17 Goodyear vector 4 season tyres I went back to mytyres.

Only they and one other had them and the other was about 30% more expensive. :o

Quick talk with them... paid by paypal and tyres arrive next Friday. Not bad if they do, only 5 working days.

Time will tell, but I hope to be pleasently surprised. A week would be good given the current demand :D

Checked with NatWest and there is an open authorisation on my credit card to MyTyres.

Spoken to MyTyres and they have confirmed that my utility bill has been received, approved and my order sent through to 'accounts' to process and for my Yokohamas to be dispatched.

Ought to get an e-mail within the next 48 hours to confirm this.

Fingers crossed.

With the uncertainty of using 14" rims on my wife's Fabia II due to compatibility with the TPM (info from Skoda Germany :wonder: ) I've been looking for winter tyres in 195/55 R15 or 185/55 R15 with no luck whatsoever, other than mytyres. However the choice left is between ultra budget Chinese or the odd well overpriced premium brand e.g. Dunlop's at £166 a corner :o.

Looks like I'm going to have to wait until things calm down a bit :( Although a local intendant tyre specialist suggested that this problem may take some time to sort out, due in his opinion anyway to a shortage of raw materials particularly rubber and a number of manufactures subsequently concentrating on summer tyre production for next year :S

Latex is in a world shortage as we use it in work for coldseals - price gone up month on moth due to demand outstripping capacity. Will affect tyres also.:(

been chasing MyTyres daily and finally this afternoon received the 'tyres dispatched' e-mail from them; phew, a relief.

Hoping they will turn up next week sometime.

Well I have to say that mytyres have done everything they said they would and on the correct day.

Tyres arrived today exactly as promised.

I ordered my tyres & wheels from Mytyres on 20th November. They didn't confirm my order until 2nd December - no explanation offered for the delay.

The delivery date was given as 9th December. They didn't arrive that day. Checking the courier's web site, they are now saying that deliveries to the Edinburgh area are five days behind due to the weather. I'm due to do a 700 mile round trip next weekend, when it's forecasted to be snowing again...

I realise that the weather isn't Mytyres' fault, but I'm still unhappy about the situation.

I can understand the delays in that area - we're a week behind deliveries into us at work. Even Grangemouth docks was shut for three days - containers we needed were apparently frozen in position and could not be lifted!!!! Madness!

They should have communicated better with you though.
