Sourcing winter tyres

Featured Replies

Fred, I know the cost has been mentioned in previous threads but would you confirm please how much the steelies were?

I went through one of my local Skoda dealers and they are £183.16 incl VAT for four, no discount given.

16" Steel wheel 3C06012027M03C £45.79 each

'Rif' covers for steel wheels ?

for comparison:

16" 'Spectrum' Alloy wheel ?

17†‘Anapurna’ Alloy wheel CCH630004 £146.00 each

17†‘Dolomite’ Alloy wheel CCH630002 £146.00 each

17†‘Flash’ Alloy wheel CCX800003 £156.00 each

17†‘Spitzberg’ Alloy wheel CCH630003 £146.00 each

Hope that helps - I didn't buy the Rif covers.

I'm sure you can get better prices on third party steel wheels - mytyres do them (for example) but could not confirm approval by Skoda beyond the description 16 " steel wheel, 7J rim, ET45, 5 stud, 512 mm pCD, 57 mm centre - (which is a VAG standard I believe).

I paid very similar price for my Skoda steel wheels.

Mike

In desperation I managed to track down the last set of winter tyres and wheels at a Skoda dealer, and due to the snow stopping everyone getting in for their appointments, they were able to fit them immediately. I was hoping to avoid the expense, but after several unsuccessful attempts at sourcing alloys from eBay, I just went for their standard winter tyre package of Skoda steelies and Cooper Weathermasters. They are storing my summer tyres until I need them again.

They may have been an unexpected expense, but I'm stunned at how well they work. I really wasn't expecting them to make so much difference. I was driving past cars and even 4x4s (presumably with summer tyres on) that were slipping sideways and spinning their wheels, with no drama at all. I still have to look out for the other vehicles on the road, but at least I'm in control of my own car!

Thanks to West End Garage in Broxburn for their speedy service. I've only used them a few times, but they've been as painless as visiting a garage can be so far

Interesting. Mytyres confirmed to me that they were "fully SKoda approved" and added the comment "we only supply approved wheels" :wonder:

Sales patter probably then!

Incidentally, if anyone is still sitting on the fence and unsure of whether winters are a worthwhile investment - I can only say YES! :giggle:

Thanks Fred, of course if you were to add the 'Rif' covers to that (although I know you are not) you're knocking on the door of £300. Hence I am going to look at some cheap alloys for not a lot more, clearly I'm not going the Skoda alloy route. I could of course, as suggested elsewhere, go without the covers but I didn't buy my SM to have it go 'naked' for 4 months of the year. I want it looking good all year round

Mytyres.co.uk have today got 215/60/16 Dunlop winter tyres for £255.20 per corner.

£1,020.40 for all four

Postage and packaging included :D Any takers?

makes my £312 fitted seem cheap, and I thought that was expensiveemoticon-0136-giggle.gif

What I didn't say was that I asked for the confirmation of approval in writing, an unrecorded telephone conversation isn't evidence for the insurance company. An e-mail is the minimum, a signed letter better.

The MyTyres wheels may be fully approved, I have no reason to think otherwise, it was purely the insurance issue. Being a German company MyTyres may well take approval very seriously.

(If it hadn't been for the fuss some insurance companies are making about winter wheels I probably wouldn't have bothered. I still don't have an answer re the genuine Skoda items.)

I didn't like the price of the Skoda Rif covers or the look of some of the cheap aftermarket ones. The problem I've had in the past on another car was salty slush building up between the cover and the wheel.

I'm going to go for the VW Transporter T5 Centre caps which appear to protect the nuts and hub while leaving the outer wheel fully ventilated. See "I got my winter tyres fitted" 900000 /Johann

Just what I have done.

Sorry any of you who couldn't decide - the price has gone up.

Now £232 each! That makes £1128.00 and that doesn't include the wheels.

I got 4 Goodyears from them for £433 - The Dunlops seem awfully dear!

Supply and demand.

The industry doesn't supply, punters demand, punter have to pay excessive amounts.....

I was going to say something about SM supply and demand, but it doesn't tie up. Well it does because 2nd hand ones were going for more than new a few weeks ago...

Mike

Kwik Fit have got the Continental winter contact 830 for under £82 each for the 205/55/16 if you buy 4.

Just got some for mine.

The manager thought K F had a good supply that they pre ordered, with a bit of snow in mind.

A very good deal but you must pay and book online first to get it. I would not normally use KF but would have jumped at this had I not already fitted my winter tyres. Avon Ice Touring ST at £80 each fitted (205/55 16 H) 2 weeks ago.

The 830 comes in two versions the TS 830 which is unidirectional and the TS 830P which is not. I think you'll be very pleased with these tyres, good ride and no road noise.

Edited by jeep

I think these are the TS830, as they do have a direction of rotation marked on the sidewall.

Not gone any distance yet with them, just the mile or so from the fitting shop, but that's encouraging to hear.

I was pretty impressed by the guys at that particular KF, the car was actually booked in for tomorrow, but the tyres turned up today, so they rang and asked if I'd like them fitted sooner, so I went for it. They were very careful with the Annapurnas as they came off and put them in the boot carefully as well. They did admit to not knowing what pressures to use and asked me if I knew, so looked in the petrol flap and added 0.2 bar as folks have said on here. All done without fuss.

Glad you're sorted now Nigel. Just waiting....and waiting....and waiting for any news that my monster is on its way to Epsom.

Mike

Thanks Mike, it must be very soon now. I hope that transporter has winter tyres to look after your SM. B)

Are you going to take your steelies over to Allams to pop on for you?

That is the plan. I just need some good weather so I can get the polo over to Epsom:-). The Polo is US in snow. The tyres are naff.

Have Allams agreed to do this for anyone?

If so it would be worth me taking my winters up when I go to collect our Yeti if the weather is still hostile.

(Don't fancy having 4 wheels loose in the back though, will have to be tied down.)
