Re-mapping ECU

Featured Replies

I have a 2008 1.9tdi elegance - my local garage do re-maps and claim 105bhp can become 140bhp!

Is it worth the money and does it really deliver fuel economy savings alongside increased performance?

Thanks in advance...

Phil

hi,

When i got my vRS mapped it did indeed improve mpg in eco driving (ie steading 65/70mph on motorway), but also cheap maps (probably like your local garage) tend to use over fuelling to help increase performance along with increasing turbo boost and this would obviously decrease mpg when accelerating and using new power.

It would change performance probably quite dramatically, but tbh I wouldnt get one just to save money on ecenomy as the initial outlay on the map (~£400) would take years to recoup. Equally the map would increase wear (turbo & clutch mainly) and tear on your car. for example your way of driving may have to change if you use low down torque as this would strain the clutch with new map.

Also include your yearly insurance costs £50-£100+, so may be a false economy!

Thanks both.

Would quite like the extra performance, but wouldn't really want to increase wear on the car components...

Can it strain the timing belt, too?

No, it wouldn't put any extra strain on the cambelt. That just turns the cams.

I've had maps on most my cars but haven't done the Octavia yet. I've never had a map related problem.

I would suggest from my experience definately go for a remap as it will totally transform your car.

Not much evidence on this and other manufacturers forums that remaps cause early component failure. There are/were a lot of remapped Police skodas out there

with big mileage.

Cheers - might give it a go.

What about the new MOT test from 2012 that will check for these things?

I can definately recommend these, I had my vRS done by them last February and the transformation is quite remarkable. For your car it would cost a meer £250, and you certainly can't get as much bang for your buck any other way. They do quote and extra 45 bhp, 65 lb/ft on the 1.9 tdi 105 but tbh figures are just for the pub, the real difference is when you get behind the wheel..................conclusion? Go for it, you will not be dissapointed!!!
