Bigger brakes mean less hp

Featured Replies

found this sounded intresting

They have a show there where they were doing some exhaust mods on an Acura. They do the dyno thing after installing a larger diameter exhaust and they actually lost a lot of hp. So, they put back the stock exhaust and they lost more power. They were baffled until they call this expert and they realize that they had also put some larger brakes.

Turns out, so they said, that having larger brakes, even thought they were lighter, having the weight spread over a larger radius creates more inertia and requires more power to accelerate them brakes in a circular motion (torque and angular momentum issues).

were the brakes 46" in diameter?

thats massive losses

unsprung weight anyone?

Go for carbon brake discs, should reduce the weight over iron discs ;)

lets just say you arnt going to loose much power nothing a good set of wheels wont fix

also the loss in bhp wont outway the ability to stop later and faster so you will still be faster :)

If you look at F1 brakes they are very small considering the amount of power they generate.

Unsprung weight is a key...I have my eye on a set of rims that are about 7kgs each...not for any performance reasons, I have a bad back and lugging wheels about is annoying. :)

I think a similar issue may revolve around clutches....a lightweight one will spin up quickly, but also drop fast, a heavier one while taking more to get going will have more inertia once going..well it sounded okay a few moments ago in my head :(

its been said that every KG of unsprung weight is equivalent to 2bhp ie rims, suspension components, brakes etc. and 1bhp per kilo for sprung weight...

which is why i got rid of my 17" kahn RSRs as i rekon they were 5kg a peice hevier than the OE 16" jobbies... which is equiv to 40bhp.... it felt like it too :D

.a lightweight one will spin up quickly, but also drop fast

same can be said for lightened and balanced flywheels ;)

that's it then, the brakes are coming off tomorrow morning...

that's it then, the brakes are coming off tomorrow morning...
...and the wheels?

you would not loose power, but it would give a tiny increase in inertia.

...and the wheels?

Good lord Denis, you're right, how could i be so stupid as to not think about those. Yes, definately wheels and brakes off tomorrow, awesome!

:D

Good lord Denis

Don't address him like that - it'll only encourage him

;)

Good lord Denis' date=' you're right, how could i be so stupid as to not think about those. Yes, definately wheels and brakes off tomorrow, awesome!

Well it has been proved that a Fabia can travel along the road without using it's wheels , so it could be worth a go
