Tracking messed up by garage!

Featured Replies

Had my fabia in today to get it's front suspension bushes done (amoungs other things). When I dropped it off, everything with the steering was fine- the sterring wheel and wheels lined up like they should.

Now when I go to pick up the car, I'm told the tracking is out. Low and behold when I get in and drive off, the sterring wheel and wheels do not line up anymore!

I'm guessing they've done something when doing the bushes, but is there anyway I can prove they've caused the damage and get them to pay to resolve it?

I think i'm been taken for a ride by this lot. 3rd time i've been into get things fixed in as many weeks! :wall:

When you do the bushes they may have dropped the subframe, you'll never get this refitted exactly the same so the tracking will be out from fitting the bushes.

Nothing damaged, but they should have made you aware that the tracking needs doing after the bushes..

Thanks for the info. How much can I expect to pay to get it fixed?

I'm pretty annoyed with them still though. I feel like I'm getting ripped off at every oppotunity. They'll quote me for the work, including labour and VAT, then when it comes to the actual bill its almost double what they originally said!

Had my bushes done yesterday, and the tracking is not 100%, that said plenty of places quoted me saying it would need tracking done afterwards. I think it is pretty difficult to replace suspension parts without re-doing the tracking.

If you're in Peterborough i'd pop over to Apex Tires in Mancetter Square. They're a good bunch for tracking.

About £20-£30 for simple tracking I think.

i paided £22 to get my trackin done.

the garage should of told u it wud most likely need tracking after the job was finished.

from what u said doesnt seem the garage have damaged anything so cant see them paying for the tracking.

Does that include labour?

Tracking is pretty much all labour I think.

Just a case of adjusting some settings on the car. Shouldn't need any new parts (unless something is broken).

Tracking is just a case of changing the postion of a couple of bolts about 5 minutes work. yet a garage will easily make it last 20 so they can charge £20-£30.

it is possible to change those bushes without dropping the subframe when you just do one side at a time, but tbh i'd have thought they would have adjusted the tracking as a matter of course after doing such a job

Tracking was included in my price when they did mine. I'd find a new garage if you're unhappy.

I'd agree with the last two comments - if you take it in for suspension work like that, the garage should be re-adjusting the tracking automatically as part of finishing the job - to hand it back with dodgy tracking is dam right dangerous in my opinion as you can knacker your tyres as well as doing only half a job - I wouldn't use that garage again.

Thats what I would have thought. Just been on the phone with them to complain about the ridiculas price they charged for that and other work, and the fact they never once mentioned that the tracking would have to be done afterwards.

Apparently they don't do tracking there at all and it's something I'd have to sort out myself. And no, I will not be using them again! Rip off merchants :@

Any future work I will get done at another VAG garage in the area I think

Gumby,

How much did you pay to get the bushes done, if the price didn't reflect getting the tracking done as well then they are possibly not quite as bad as everyone is suggesting.

Flip.

When getting a quote for replacement console bushes - you must ask the question, does this quote include tracking the steering to it's original settings.

Or better still, ask them to do the job without undoing the subframe by cutting the old bushes out with a hack saw blade and pressing the new bushes in position - this is what I did and the steering was still spot on.

Not sure how I much I paid for the bushes specifically as I had other work done and invoice isn't exactly clear. Got the tracking corrected yesterday and properly aligned by the nice people at f1 motorcentres. the bloke was really helpful and explained everything and that the original garage should have done the tracking or warned me it would need doing.

Ideed. It's never going to be right otherwise.
