Auto dimming mirror

Featured Replies

Seeing as my Superb is a bog standard Elegance it lacks the auto dimming mirror, my last three cars had them and I really miss it.

The superb has the rain and light sensor pod already fitted and SWMBO's Yeti has the same pod AND the dimming mirror.

I dismantled the sensor pod on my car today to see what's what:

The standard mirror just pops off it's ball and socket swivel mount, the mount has a duct down the middle leading from the rear of the mirror to the sensor pod which means it is generic.

There is a 3 core cable that runs down the plastic tube from the roof lining to the sensor pod, it terminates in the form of a 3 pin push fit plug for the rain sensor. I'm guessing it's +ve, -ve and a data feed back to the wiper control.

I was hoping there would be another connector in there for an auto dimming mirror via a generic wiring loom from wherever.

My questions:

Where does the feed for the dimming mirror come from?

Is the mirror a straight 12v? If so I can nick a feed from the cat vision lighting in the roof lining.

Ideally I could do with a diagram so I can see what I am doing, knowing my luck the wires will give no clue as to what is +ve and -ve :wonder:

i'll have a look tomorrow and confirm, pretty sure its just a live and earth,

I would be most grateful if you could, thanks

I am also wondering whether the mirror has a plug in the back for the wires, if so I'll have to get the wire and plug when I order the mirror.

If I can take a feed from the lighting it'll be a fairly easy mod

Excellent thread, I was going to look into this myself as I not got the dipper mirror either.

I eagerly await the outcome :S

As soon as I have all of the info I need I'll post everything such as part numbers, wiring etc etc.

Great stuff

I have the wiring diagram and how to hook it up along with part numbers required. I'll post later today if required, and as long as I did not lose them in my move.

Right, i have just collected my dimming mirror from a Skoda dealer plus a connection plug that is required, all told we are talking about £160-ish

The mirror is: 1K0 857 511B (light grey front, black coloured rear)

The 6 pin plug is: 4B0 971 833

With regards to the connector -

There is a 6 pin plug that connects into the rear of the mirror, i am going out on a limb here and guessing that the 6 pins are for the following functions:

+12v supply to the mirror from wherever. 0v for obvious reasons.

2 x 12v supply out to each respective dimming door mirror plus 2 x 0v connectors, the interior mirror controls the two door mirrors so this would make sense.

Please correct me if this is cobblers :giggle:

I could do with some additional information on what pin does what so i can wire it correctly, i don't want to reverse the polarity and potentially blow the mirror's internals. The pins are labelled 1-6 on the connector.

Also, how does the light fitting come out? I need to access the 12v supply to the LED ambient lights to power the dimming mirror.

Thanks.

Woah there... are you saying that if you have the auto dimming interior mirror fitted... that the external mirrors also dim too? Wasn't aware of that B)

I haven't got the auto diming mirrors on the Superb but on my golf I do.... I believe it only tints the drivers side (not both mirrors). Obviously the Superb will do it better.... or will it?

It shoudl be standard on the Elegance.... but I guess we'll survive - sounds a little fiddly the post installation.

Both exterior mirrors tint on the Superb...

Thanks.

On the car I have I don't see how the mirrors can be fitted after the car is built. In the rear of the roof mounted spectacles holder/courtesy light pod there are three rear face sensors and each controls a single mirror. Those sensors need to be there or it does not work. This a mid 09 build Elegance and yes they were standard fit for Australia. OOPS, wrecked the quote, sorry about that.

Excellent... I never knew that

Really? I always thought that they were for the the likes of the ultrasonic alarm and interior temperature sensor... The auto dimming mirror has it's own light sensor iirc.

I think you'll find those three sensors are the alarm sensors. The mirror sensor is at the bottom of the mirror next to the green LED light showing that it is active. This one sensor does all the sensing for all the mirrors (internal and driver's only on a Yeti).

Yes, the 3 sensors are for the Alarm (And maybe temperature to). The sensor for the mirrors are on the mirror next to the light thats on when auto dimming is enabled.

I trust that the "light" which is on when the auto-dim is active is less distracting than not having auto-dim in the first place?

On my Saab, there is no "on" light, but when you press the switch to turn off the system, the switch pops out and has something like "off" printed on it, so more of a warning to say you've not got it active.

The light is quite dim, yes...

The only thing the dimming mirror needs is a 12v supply and a ground connection, with the mirror I also got a new mounting arm that clips straight onto the rain/light sensor pod that is bonded to the screen. I am guessing the original dimming mirror supply is from a convenience controller of some sort as the mirror is disabled when the doors are opened or reverse gear is engaged.

I will post some pictures up this weekend when I install it - IF I can get some info on the connector pins.

Just to clarify, the auto dimming mirror has an ambient light sensor that looks out the front and another sensor that faces rearwards to detect light from behind, it's next to the green LED. It also controls both dimming door mirrors on the Superb (when fitted of course) and the driver's door mirror on the Yeti.

Getting the mirror off is pretty easy as well.

I'll look at the diagram this evening, hopefully I can find the A4 page after my house move.

Thank you

Any info you have would be appreciated.

I've checked the diagrams on my own car since the autodimming is standard on Elegance in Sweden. If I'm not mistaken the internal mirror is connected to the central electric controllunit wich in turn controls the external mirrors. I have to check it a bit more so the internal mirror aint LIN-bus controlled...

I have the diagram,

its a bit damp as I found it in the car, but I think its OK.

I am trying to understand the orientation of the connector, but I think the wiring is like this.

Looking at the back of the connector, I have 4 wires along the top and 2 along the bottom making 6 connections, the layout below will not display correctly on the forum due the variable font but it should make some sense.

1{1} - RED (Fuse Box, Pos. 4), 2{6} - Brown/Red (Wire to interior light), 3){5} Yellow/Blue (not needed), 4){4} White/purple (not needed)

5{2}- Black (Earth Connection), 6{3} - Black/Blue (12V).

Each connection also has another identifier which I have put in {} which maybe the pin assignments on the connector. The diagram is to soggy to scan, so I cant help there I am afraid.

I guess 1 is the switched 12V supply, 5 is the earth, 6 is the always on 12V feed, and 2 must disable the mirror when you open the door.5 and 6 are I guess what would be linked into the canbus if you have external dimming mirrors (not fitted unless fitted with the autodim mirror anyway.

Thank you Manny, that's a massive help

The connector is 3 wide by 2 high but Marked 1-6 so should be fairly easy to wire up.

Presumably the door mirrors are directly controlled from the convenience unit and the unused cables would be used to send data to it so it can dim them. Bang goes the theory that the interior mirror directly controls the door mirrors,

The wire to the interior light must be how the mirror is shut off when a door is opened - I am guessing......

Just spotted that at the bottom of your post :giggle:

I was going to pinch a feed from the LED down lighters but thinking on they are dimmable so that is out of the question, there should be a good 12v supply up there somewhere to supply the interior and map reading lights, i can't see too much of a problem with that. The mirror will only run when it's dark so should be ok.
