Data and WAP over GPRS - difference?

Featured Replies

Just looking at a Tesco mobile deal with unlimited data, but in the list of charges it say WAP over GPRS is £4 per mb. Is mobile data different to WAP over GPRS? I know "unlimited" data has fair usage etc.

I want to surf the net on my Nokia 5800 and don't have a inclusive data plan at the moment so this one looked good but I'm confused about all this mobile data, WAP, GPRS etc.

Cheers.

If I remember right, WAP is to dailup what GPRS is up to broadband.

WAP only connects when needed, and is (or was) slower, whereas GPRS (and EDGE etc) are on all the time and faster.

I thought 'mobile data' was a generic expression and could come over WAP or GPRS, although most (if not all) new phones are GPRS enabled now anyway.

AIUI, WAP is actually a different protocol, although I used to use WAP quite a lot five or six years ago, and in practice I'm pretty sure it would dial a short number - 915000 springs to mind. All other kinds of mobile data use HTTP, and are 'always on' as you say so shouldn't be charged...
