stupid screenwash!

Featured Replies

Just topped my screenwash up and because I didn`t know how full it was Iv`e ended up spilling loads over the alternator when it suddenly shot up the pipe. Why can`t they have put the bloody bottle where you can see it to tell how full it is and why are there no markings to let you knwo how much is in there anyway?

Stupid place to put the filler neck as well - right where it overflows onto the alternator!

1. One assumes the Elegance doesn't have a level sensor?

2. Dare I say it - pour slowly :S

The alternative view: no offence meant, but if you don't know how full it is then as Jonny says, pour more slowly like the rest of us would do! Can't comment on the actual design, I haven't seen it, but my Skoda has an easy to see and very long bottle neck.

Once biten,twice shy!,pour slowly:giggle:works everytime for me:p

I like the filter thats in the screenwash bottle neck!! Thats a good idea. I did spill a bit on alternator but it was mainly froth!!

The Fabia is no different to any other modern car, if the bottle were visible it would take up a fair chunk of the engine bay, so they place it low down out of site. Slow and steady is the how to do it.

I did do it slwoly but i couldnt even see when the water was coming up the filler neck as its in such an awkard postion - tried to pour and watch at the same time and ended up tipping even more over the alternator!

Indeed, I fill a 2L lemonade bottle with the screenwash/water mixture, make sure there is a froth on top then pour it in - as it comes near the top of the neck of the filler the froth comes up first so you know to stop. I find the plastic filler neck is fairly see-through so I can see the coloured mixture coming up, but not much use in the dark or when using just plain water.

Did exactly the same thing today

Wasn't my worst problem though really, found out the garage who sold me the car hadn't checked the coolant lvl and it's now below minimum....:S

Off to a well known high street retailer today!

I probably did the wrong thing then as I did it late at night when it was difficult to see and there wasn`t any foamy stuff on the top.

Think I might need some more coolant. Its about a third of the way between the min and max levels. Assuming I have to get it from Skoda as it appears to be a pale red colour.

Think you use the same type as me. Coolant might be what you need.

As for the screenwash, I have only bought one bottle and I got the VAG stuff from a local VW dealer - said it was for fan jets. Nice stuff from what I've used so far and at least Skoda can't moan if the jets block and push a pipe off, flooding the boot!

I never pour too cautiously, don't get me wrong, I don't going throwing about! But trying to get everything cleanly into most washer tank spouts is near impossible, especially the late model fabia's. I start with the screen wash, then finish with water. I let the water go everywhere to rinse anywhere the screen wash could be sat. Most of the stuff the engine bay is more than tolerant to water, it's better to make sure you haven't got a load of screen wash sat on a section of paint work!

thats true but its kinda annoying when it splashed everywhere! Glad it wasn`t as cold as it is today, might have frozen on the alternator!

surely you can hear the windscreen fill up ,the tone changes as the air leaves the bottle

nope, doesnt make any noise! unless your somewhere really quiet, I was doing it in the garage.

Any liquid rising from a larger reservoir up a narrow spout will make a noise.

Combine this audible clue with the visual advantage offered by pouring slowly and I'm not really sure how you can get it wrong.

A little spillage is normal, enough to risk freezing up your alternator suggests to me you're doing something wrong!
