Winter tyres on 2WD

Featured Replies

Did you notice how the bottom of the rear door collects the muck, just where the protector foils are now fitted?

What are the chances of SUK eventually doing the right thing and agreeing to retro-fit them to existing cars?

At over £30 a pair plus fitting, the price is extortionate for two little bits of plastic film that should have been fitted in the first place!

  • Mainly the closest in rolling diameter I think to the existing 17" wheels in the sense that the speedo reading will be somewhere near the same, Jessica was not happy having to mentally check the actua

Yes I have noticed that the foils get very dirty. As does the boot door.

Hi Fred. Glad you're enjoying Pat. I've now done about 1650 miles in Elsie.

These are the skoda badges I have used:

Thanks Mike - I've ordered some. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

450 miles now and 42 mpg indicated (not true mpg).emoticon-0100-smile.gif

The plan is coming together - thanks, Mike. I had an email back from mytyres basically saying what is on their website for a particular vehicle is it so I'll definitely get OEM wheels through Allams then source the winters from whoever.

Did you go straight to VW for the centre caps and were they reasonably priced? Does one need to buy centre caps separately for the badges or just stick them over the VW badge? Do the original wheel bolts fit?

Thanks for the badge link.

So many questions - sorry...!

We'll have to have a 'black & white Yeti show' at Allams sometime....emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

I just found some T5 hub centre caps on ebay.......

they fit over the nuts as supplied, though I have lost 1 hub cap as it was broken on the back. and never fitted properly. I have a spare set.

White/black ..... white/Gobi ..... black wheels Allams...why notemoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Okay, last questions, Mike...! emoticon-0124-worried.gif

Are they the 75mm badges that your link was to?

My question about the wheel bolts was did you use the same wheel bolts as used on the original alloys for fitting the steelies?

I feel a shopping spree coming on, late birthday and Christmas presents for T1BET... emoticon-0144-nod.gif

Hi aero,

standard wheel bolts will fit both VAG alloys and steels :)

By the way which tyre size are you considering :wonder:

Are they the 75mm badges that your link was to? YES they are the ones I bought.

My question about the wheel bolts was did you use the same wheel bolts as used on the original alloys for fitting the steelies? YES they are the same - think I read that in TP's wheel & tyre post, but may have been elsewhere.

Hope that answers your questions aerofurb.

Only one suggestion.......go for it, you will not regret it as it transforms stopping and road holding (and moving off up steep hills....) in cold weather.

Mike

Thanks, Mike and TP.

I think I'll be going down the 7Jx16" steelies with 215/60 16 tyres of whatever make is around at sensible cost, availability and reputation at the time.

Thanks, Mike and TP.

There are many recommendations out there for tyres. The Continental WinterContact TS810's I have are great so far, others here have the TS830P's, then there are all the other makes..........I sourced mine from the tyre place next door to me.

I prefer the 215/60's as the speedo under reads anyway according to tom-tom, the 205/55's way under read, but the 215/60's much closer, but still read less according to tom-tom on a straight and level road, 73mph indicated, 70mph on Tom-Tom.

Mike

215/60's are thin on the ground particularly with the internet suppliers; links to various said suppiers can now be found in the Tyre Guide

Performance Alloys are advertising VREDESTEIN WINTRAC XTREME in this size, if you cannot find anything local.

TP

Thanks TP, I'll have a trawl. emoticon-0144-nod.gif
