Mk4 R32 Climatronic dead + "oil sensor workshop"

Featured Replies

Hello all

Ok, so it's not an Octavia... but it's close! Mk3 R32 Climatronic died... .Garage diagnosed no fault (yeah right) and simply replaced the fuse with an uprated one...

Now it's died again and this time the car is also displaying EPC and "Oil sensor workshop" on the dash

Any thoughts? A google search shows that there seems to be a connection between this fault message and a blown climatronic fuse but I can't see any explination as to why.

Re the fuse going, my first thought is a dead flap motor which is shorting, or possibly a damaged wire somewhere. Are there any common issues or can anyone offer any advice? I'm going to look at the car tomorrow complete with vag-com but would like a few ideas if possible.

Cheers

If its an R32 its a MK4 Golf, unless its a quite modified MK3.

Need to see what the current flow diagram lists on that fuse, might well be worth looking at the oil level sensor wiring from the sump, they quite often drop down onto the driveshaft and rub away.

Oops, sorry typo. It is a MK4.

Could the oil sensor wiring cause the climatronic fuse to go?

Thanks for your help

Like I say without looking at the right current flow diagram its difficult to say but it does ring a bell for some reason.

...simply replaced the fuse with an uprated one...

What?? Fuse ratings are selected so that the fuse melts before the wire. "Up-rating" the fuse will simply move the melting problem so somewhere else that is both harder to reach and more expensive to fix.

Yes, I'm aware of this... I said the same thing when the garage did it, but it's not my car and my advice was ignored!

Ok thanks for that. I'll take a look tomorrow.

Ok I've got the climatronic system working. The power feed from the fuse to the climatronic unit had a short to ground. I ran a new wire and that is now working fine. The Oil sensor workshop is still there and vag com is saying "Oil sensor open or short to ground"

Both faults occurred at exactly the same time, so I'm wondering if there is maybe damage to the loom, possibly behind the instrument panel.

Is anyone aware of any known issues along these lines, or any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

The only times I've experienced damage to looms have been caused either by an overheating connector (age + dirt => higher impedance => more heat generated => plug begins to melt) or, in one case, an old battery leaking acid onto a cable below it. A failing multi-way connector could explain the multiple issues you are experiencing.

Many thanks. I will pull the dash cluster out and examine the plugs on the back...

Good luck. Let us know what you find - I'm intrigued.

  • 1 year later...

I have the exact same problem.

"Oil Sensor Workshop!" when i started the car. The interior fan not working (due to broken fuse).

I took out the fan but still the fuse blows as soon i start the car. (and the sensor still warn).

Did you come up with something, are they related
