Part worn winter tyres

Featured Replies

Got the option of buying 4 Bridgestone Blizzacs 205\55\16's with 4.5mm tread left for less than £60 to go on my MK II Leon steelies. Reckon they'll be OK for a few months? I know they won't be as good as when new, but are all you who bought new ones gonna chuck them when they're down this far? :p I only really need to get this winter out of them...

You've probably got between 1mm & 2mm of usable tread left in them.

I'd be happy with part worns. But then again I'm tight! Others will say false econamy and others will say why risk it as they are the only thing that connect your car to the ground; four bits of rubber not much bigger the the size of a CD case. If you are happy with them and you've considered any safety aspects surrounding buying part worns then I would say go for it. Each to their own.

I would be happy at the moment as I cant find any 225/50/17 apart some that are made in China which at 380 a set with crap net reviews is a non starter, these are a good make so probably far better than the new chinese ones

I can't imagine the snow will cause much wear on the tyres so as long as you keep off the black stuff I don't see a problem?! :giggle:

snow tyres need at least 4mm before they work properly so they are almost near the limit but £60 is not bad price just to get you through this winter

In Austria (if ever you intend to go there), the legal minimum is 4 mm...

check on mytyres - can get Marangonis (got good review on another thread) for about £95 each

Should be ok for short winters in UK driving them up to say February. Then check again if ok for next year.

These are a con :'( as above 4mm is the legal minimum in many countries for winter tyres. More importantly it's the limit where a lot of manufacturers change the expensive silica compound to standard rubber. Fine for summer driving to use them up but they're not winter tyres and wont have much if any extra winter grip left.

Erm, I just ordered some Hankooks at £68.00 for a 15"rim (to go on 2nd hand steelies), van tyres I presume since they have a higher load rating, the local dealer apologised that the cheaper? Perrilies were sold out. Be a week before they are in mind, but hey the Steyr could do with a run out....................... Now when I get her on the winter tyres she really deserves..........way...........................hay. I'll be putting a snow-plough blade on the front & contracting.

Cheers to you & lard-ajc. I really needed them on today as Im off to Newcastle tonight but will certainly give them a call when I get back as I can see them being needed again

FWIW if it's £60 for all 4, then they will be better than summer tyres.

If they are £60 each, then don't waste your money.

just been quoted £89.90 each fitted for 205/55/16 winter tyres, they didnt know what make they were though as there not in stock till Friday !

Kwik Fit are doing them for £81.65 each if you order 4 at the moment.

That's the Conti Winter Contact TS830 tyre.
