Is a £1000 Deposit without finance normal ?

Featured Replies

Is it normal to have to have to pay £1000 deposit on a Skoda Octavia Elegance without taking a finance option?

All the posts I've seen on here have always said either £300 or £500 was paid, a £1000 seems to much.

Mind you pay at least some of the deposit with a credit card (over 100 pounds) then the bank is implicated in the purchase. Otherwise the dealer can go bust and you're out the money. never mind what they tell you - they can go bust.

TBH unless you're ordering a V8 in dayglow green the dealer should have no problem getting shot of a cancelled order - consequently there is not a grand at risk if you shoot through. I have recently paid a grand deposit on a new Honda in Ireland but there are tax implications for the dealer here - However, I made sure he took it on a credit card.

I paid £500 deposit on an Octavia VRS which is due for March delivery. Pretty sure I was asked for £500 for my VW that I have at present.

I paid £1000 due to the amount of extras ordered. Paid it on credit card so hopefully safe.

I was asked to put down 300 on my VRS order and that had plenty of extras on it.

1k sounds a bit much!

Max £500 unless you are going for some really weird colour and options. £1000 is a con. Go somewhere else.

I paid £500 as a deposit on my Yeti, but another Skoda dealer wanted £1000.

But if I cancel the order won't I lose the deposit? (I'm outside the cooling off period) I did pay the £1000 on my credit card.

The reason I'm thinking of cancelling is an offer I've seen on Civic Diesel's that includes 3yrs free servicing and road tax and 0% for 2yrs. The Octy I've ordered is petrol but would only be couple of hundred cheaper when servicing and road tax is factored in. I wouldn't have touched the new Civic with all the clutch failures I've read about but the facelift Civic is meant to have had an upgraded clutch to fix the problem.

Yes. I don't think changing your mind because you think there's a better deal elsewhere will get you much sympathy from the dealer. It probably won't cost the dealer £1000 if you pull out, but he's entitled to keep the deposit unless he's failed to meet his side of the bargain. (By not delivering when promised for example)

Which dealer was this at Ultima, i assuming you're from wales, i had mine from Sinclair and i only had to pay a £200 deposit on my VRS and my folks the same on their Yeti, £1k does sound like a hell of a lot of a deposit and i'd definately make sure it was on a credit card.

It's from a dealer in South East England. In what circumstances can deposits be refunded ?

If they break the terms and conditions of the contract e.g. unable to deliver car on time or with the right spec etc.
