Ethernet Wireless Adapter?

Featured Replies

Do they exist? A Sony TV I've seen has an ethernet port for connecting to the Internet however a USB dongle can be used instead but only Sony's one works and it's about £70. Bit of a rip off since normal ones are about £20-£30. I was wondering is there a wireless adapter you can plug into the ethernet port?

Something like this? Must be newer, cheaper ones somewhere I'd guess.

A friend has one - configure it with the settings for the wireless connection, plug the device you want connected in, and off you go.

He's used it for 360 etc -> router, as well as connecting 4 port hubs to the ISP router etc - quite a decent toy really. Powered by 2 usbs, or a wall socket.

The gaming adaptor would probably do the job, but from past experience trying to run Iplayer over one of these, I'd be more inclined to get the home plug adpators as they provide a more consitent connection and less stutter.

Or you could do what I did in the end and just go for the really simple low cost solution of running a 10m network cable under the carpet to the BT Homehub.

I've got one of the Sony Freesat TVs and the biggest benefit from hooking up the ethernet port is being able to hit the red button on the BBC channels and watch Iplayer without having to use, PC, will or PS3.

Use either the homeplugs (Preferably devolo or netgear, belkin aren't bad either.)

Or, use a netgear media adaptor, also known as an ethernet bridge:

Maplin (Not bad, but only 54G, not N rated)

Never thought maplin would ever be cheaper than amazon!!

EDIT: Just realised i've resurrected a 2 moth old thread, and the batteries in my keyboard are dying

That's the exact one I got in the end and from Maplin. I couldn't believe they were cheaper than Amazon either!

Works perfectly with the TV and the only "problem" I have is "acquiring" a full copy of a media server that works better than Windows Media Player

If it's still relevant...I use the Devolo 200mbit AV Easy Homeplugs and have my entire network running on them. They are simply brilliant, no hassles and full speed all the time. No slowing as you can get with wireless at times of high radio traffic in your area. I can stream to or from my tv or blu-ray, and send content up to my computer or from my computer to my tv or blu-ray. Comet beat every price on the net when I challenged them. Devolo are German and are know in the trade as pretty much the best. They work with Linux too, which I run.
