best glow plugs? :)

Featured Replies

hey :)

as above really :) just decided i should change my glow plugs altho im sure they are not required until one fails, car is on 74k and i give it a full service two weeks ago so thinking about doing the glow plugs too, figured it will do more good than bad lol :) just looking some advise on how to change them? accessing them and removing them etc? tools required and sizes etc please :) ive read that you have to be careful not to snap them so what can i do to avoid this? products which can be used ie lubricating fluid? and lastly what plugs are recommended? and are all plugs just straight swaps or are glow plugs similar to spark plugs with the sparking part having to be the correct gap?

many thanks, jordan :)

You'll need a long 10mm socket but TBH I wouldn't change them unless one has failed.

Since glow plugs are only required for a few seconds on a cold start I don't see how any could really be described as "best" - you don't get any performance gains or economy gains by having a different type/brand - the ordinary Skoda ones appear to be fine, don't they?

I've just got some OEM ones from vwspares.co.uk and on the website it says the make is beru whoever they are !

I've been advised to change them when the engine is warm as they will be easier to remove, not sure what other people recommend though ?

In a Peugeot 306 we previously had Densa glow plugs which from good were distinctly average. We replaced with NGK (which were slightly more expensive) and are delighted with them.

Importantly there are some differences between glow plugs with regards to efficiency.

The densa ones when new drew about 20A each, we replaced with NGK ones (which I would highly recommend!) and they drew 15A each from new (less battery load, theoretically the same amount of heat generated) and seemed a load better than the Densas we had originally (even when they were new)

Not sure if the same range of plugs are available for the Fabia but when I replace mine I will be going for NGK if tehy are available that's for sure.

My choice would be the NGK glowplugs.

Having said that - in the current weather conditions - "If it aint broke dont fix it" springs to mind.
