vRS Winter tyres. which ones?

Featured Replies

Hi, there was a topic a few weeks agao about winter tyres for vRS's.. I believe they have to be 16". my spare wheel is 16'" so I'm thinking of using that so i just need one other wheel. Can I leave the standard 18" alloys on the back or do I have to change all 4 wheels.

Thanks.

i was going to do this......getting the wheel was tricky and my current set of tyres were about finished so opted for a full new set

instead.

I don't think there is any concern with running 2 steels................it means only storing one after snow has gone.

I put uniroyal rainsports all round and have had no bother in snow. BTW

no..............................best changing all 4 or not bothering at all IMHO.

you can either swap the rubber on your 18's or buy 4 16" cheap steels/alloys and fit some rubber. Though from what I understand stock is becoming an issue

thanks guys... Sprout, are the Uniroyal Rainsports ok for all year round or just winter?

and are they the Rainsport 1 or 2 ?

Personally, I would change all 4 wheels if you're going for winter tyres.

This vid highlights the problems with fitting winter tyres to just the driven wheels (about 1.30 min into the vid):-

I can only find winter tyres up to 16" daimeter anyway and as I'm on 18" wheels I'm not sure about running 16's on the front with 18's on the back!

but my spare that came (as an option!) is only 16" !! so is it OK ? the 205/55 higher profile compensating for the smaller diameter wheel!

thinking now I should have got a Yeti or Scout !

Hi,

I put 4 new 16" steel wheels with Goodyear ultragrip 7 winter tyres onto my VRS last Wednesday and can honestly say that it's the best money i've spent on any car.

I was going to just remove my summer tyres and put winter ones on but found that it would cost the same to change to the smaller wheels, plus my alloys need a bit of work so I can get them done before the weather warms up. I haven't been stuck once (unlike earlier this year) and after being in a mates 4x4 with summer tyres on I would say that mine is safer and less likely to slide around or get stuck over the next few months.

Get some on, any will do as they all seem to get a better rating in this weather than any summer tyres - But I would definately recommend the Goodyears

and are they the Rainsport 1 or 2 ?

Rainsport 2's - nice deep V tread

thanks for all info.....just trying to find some 16" steel wheels now.

The bottom link seems good, he has 205/55-16 winter tyres for £70 a pair which is the same rolling radius as 225/40-18 so £260 for a set with the rims

I saw the steel wheels on there last night and was wondering if they'd fit. the offset is 50, is that ok?

I know close to diddly squat about wheels....
