Strut Brace & Warranty

Featured Replies

Will an Ibiza strut brace affect my warranty - even if I get it fitted by the dealer?

Also, as this could be called safety equipment - is it likely to increase my insurance premium?

1) should not do as no parts are affected as if they were SEAT would not sell it themselves as an official part for what is essentially the same car.

2) you would have to call the insurance company to find that out.

Technically yes as you have made the car non-standard, however, in reality you should be fine as it is a Seat part and, realistically, what damage can it do :)

Hmmm - not sure how this is classed as safety equipment - if the car handles better, you'll likely be driving faster ;) I had mine done with the springs and dampers and my insurance company just told me that everything was covered by "suspension modifications" which cost me a few extra quid. I guess it depends how your insurance company class it....

What sort of extra premium did they cost you Chris?

It was in the order of 50 quid (good postcode no NCB). That's with Tesco and it was classed as a cosmetic mod for which they have 3 brackets for mod values - <

The box that the strut brace comes in has printed on the side "Antishock Reinforcing Bar", there's nothing to indicate that you can go faster with it fitted, or that it adds any additional safety element to the structure of the vehicle. I can't see why an insurance company would want to charge more for it, it's not like it's a full internal roll cage which is a requirement for competition motor sports.

Is it a worthwhile mod on it's own - does it tidy up the handling without any other suspension changes etc - it's a slippery slope and I know if I do more I'll end up doing everything!!!

Also, what would be the cost to dealer fit - warranty in mind...?

Theirs a good step by step guide that Chavyboy did on here. Think I'll be taking some note for when I fit my strut brace too :D

Theres loads of folks who have these... Hellfire has one and I think he was impressed with the difference.

My mates getting a dealer to fit a strut brace to his FR, and they are charging ~

I fitted the Seat strut brace to mine over Xmas. Took the Furby out yesterday and noticed a small (looks like a cut/crack) on the plastic cover at the rear of the dash which holds the screen vents. I pointed this out to the missus and she commented 'could the strut brace have done it' Nah i said, wouldn't of thought so. But last night i got to thinking that maybe now the brace has made eeverything a little tighter at the front that this plastic has cracked! Worth thinking about as ScoobyChris said no damage could occur. On the face of it probably not, but maybe as the crack was not there when bought. Anybody any ideas?

I've been told before that many insurance companies (and possibly car companies if you're worried about the warranty) don't like strut braces because of the implications in a front-side impact. If you pull out into oncoming traffic and somebody hits you hard in the driver's side wing, you'd expect that inner and outer wing, plus driver's side shock etc. to take the brunt of it. But if you have a brace fitted, the shock travels to the other shock tower too and can buckle that wing/shock etc. Which increases the chances of twisting your chassis and having to get the car on a jig to get it straight again. Which could mean the difference between a repair and a write-off in such a situation...

Then again, if you pull out into oncoming traffic without looking you deserve to get ****ted

I'd put money on the end brackets bending before the chassis legs do in the event of that kind of accident.

Dont forget to be approved it has to pass those sort of tests.

@Ross - being within a nice Skoda dealership your good self, would this be under warranty if fitted by the dealer involved?

My thinking is the strut does appear to improve certain aspects of the handling, at slight expense of body roll. If the warranty remains intact I'd probably go for it, if not, I'll have to wait for a bit :(

The brace wouldnt be covered by warranty, i.e if a fault developed with the brace we wouldnt replace it.

But I cant see why the brace would effect anything else warranty wise as long as it had been fitted correctly.

At the very least it might shear the bolts off the opposite side strut though, which again would add to the expense...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed to fitting them and may very well just possibly perhaps soon be sorting one on my Furby, just saying what I've heard (and not heeded...)

Might get one fitted then ;) - will do it via the dealer so there is an official record, thus avoiding any potential 'it was the other guys' scenario ;)

As you say it's unlikely to cause issues unlike getting the car chipped :D
