New vRS - Any benefit with 97RON (V-Power, etc)?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Have any of you with the new vRS done a comparison test, or noticed any difference between using Regular Unleaded (95RON) or higher octane stuff (97RON) like V-Power, BP-Ultimate, etc?

Specifically, improvements in performance, economy, general engine condition, etc?

I know some people with performance cars who won't even touch their cars with 95RON stuff, and swear by 97RON.

With me picking up the new vRS on Saturday this would be good to know :)

Thanks

Edit: Just realised V-Power is 99RON, not 97!

although i don't have the new vrs, IMO it does nothing, infact it makes/made my mpg worse so never touched the stuff again just use my local supermarket and get my nectar points :giggle:

The engine will only deliver full power on 97RON, that should also give the best economy too. Using 95 should not hurt it though as it specifies both on the filler cap.

It does make a difference in high output engines. The original Octavia vRS required 97RON for full power.

only ever use tesco 99 momentum stuff

clubcard points :giggle:

Thanks for the reply mate, is yours petrol or diesel?

The dealer told me he reckoned I would be okay on 95RON.

When I said I knew people who swore by the performance gains, they were all petrol, and a lot of their cars, I think, were specifically mapped to the higher octane fuel.

This is what I thought, hence why I reckonned I needed 97RON.

I presume 180hp is classed as 'high output' :)

I tested this out (not scientifically mind...) on my 2001 vRS.

I tried a full tank of Asda's petrol and a full tank of BP Ultimate. Although I didn't notice some "miracle BHP booster," you can certainly notice the difference. Supermarket stuff makes it slugish, but the BP stuff makes it more responsive.

It's more costly for special fuel, but if you're a true petrolhead, that won't bother you ;)

Perhaps more accurately - high compression. ie. (usually) a forced induction engine

The higher octane makes it burn slower, which prevents pre-ignition at high compression ratios. If 95 is used, the ignition timing will be adjusted by the ECU to prevent pre-ignition, but this has the side-effect of reducing the power that can be achieved.

I had a Swift Sport which is a NA engine with only 125bhp. It was run at high compression, which meant it only ran well on 98RON, it ran like a 3 legged dog when I was forced to put 95 in in an emergency.

The vRS seems more forgiving.

Evo magazine tested various petrol engines & found conclusive proof that 'Special Brew' high octane fuels (V-Power/Utimate) compared to regular 95 Ron fuels:-

a ) Kept the engine cleaner

b ) Increased power & torque throughout the rev range (different engines saw different gains but I seem to recall that forced induction engines saw the biggest gains)

They also included some subjective views within the test & these were all positive with regards to 'Special Brew' fuels...comments like 'lively & urgent'.

I've been running the Octy VRS CRD on V-Power diesel as much as possible to help prevent DPF issues as it doesn't produce anywhere near as much soot as regular diesel. In 12,000 miles I've not had the DPF regen light on once despite lots of short/slow trips. I also find I do get better mpg...though not enough to justify the extra cost.

I'll try to keep the Furby VRS on a V-Power diet & see if I can spot the difference when the wife fills the car up (always goes for the nearest station). I'll report back my findings.

On the inside of the filler cap on my vRS it say's:- 98/(95) ron Super Unleaded for the fuel type.

I run mine on Tesco 99 momentum.

The nearest Tesco to me is a good few miles away, there are several Shells closer so it looks like it is going to be V-Power :)

I wonder why it says 98/(95)? Can we even get 98 over here?

Edit: Just realised, V-Power is 99RON, not 97! My bad.

Hi there, i think i'm right in saying V-power is 98.

Yes, V-power is 98. Tescos is 99.

My interpretation of 98/(95) is that 98 is the preferred fuel, but 95 won't harm it. If I owned on, I would tend to stick to 98.

Apologies for the Wiki Quote:

"In the United Kingdom and Denmark (where Super Unleaded must be a minimum of 97 RON), V-Power has a rating of 99 RON (whereas V-Powers' predecessor Shell Optimax was rated at 98 RON). There is one other 99 RON fuel available in the UK, namely Tesco MOMENTUM99."

How accurate this is I don't know, it is from Wikipedia.

Edit: Found some reliable information from shell.co.uk:

"Shell V-Power is a high octane fuel (99 RON) designed to help maximize the performance of many modern engines with adaptive spark timing capacity."

Oh, they've bumped it up to 99 now? Nice :)

It may take a tank or two to get the ECU used to the better quality fuel. My Bocanegra has always ran on 99 Vpower. I can easliy get 43-48MPG on my way to work and the engine has used 0.5ltrs of oil in 18k. Could be a coincidence mind. I sware by it. It may cost £4/5 more per fill but the benefits are worth it IMO.

I also run my Revo map on mode C which is designed for 100+RON. Revo HQ said it was fine to use V-power on this mode but don’t use 99tesco or 97BP etc. It should be putting out around 220/225BHP at this setting.

You’ll get your v-power card through and double points as well. I got a £10 voucher this month which was certainly nice since I would use the fuel without the reward points anyway.

The dealer said he is going to stick some fuel in for me, I'm sure it will be basic stuff, so I will start using V-Power when that runs dry. Should be able to see the difference then.

Since it is an ex-demo, I can only assume it has had regular unleaded in for the life of it so far.

Yeah you'd have thought.

When I got mine they said I could have £10's worth of fuel. I said that was fine, put less V-power in the car then :D

I telephoned Skoda for a definitive answer on the fuel issue.

98 or more is the answer only 95 in an emergency if 98 not available.

Look inside the fuel cap for a reminder.

Tony

Ours runs fine on 95

Nearest higher octane available to us is 97 BP Ultimate...It made no difference whatsover!!

Thats because BP ultimate is Poo. I dont know wny anyone would you pay more for it than v-power when its inferior unless they didnt have access to a Shell.

Thanks mate, this just encourages me to buy V-Power even more now :)

Pick up the car tomorrow, can't wait!

Edit: With the car most likely have been run on 95 for 5000 miles, will it have done it any harm at all?

Edited by Stu vRS

A guys on the Seat forums had issues with his. The dealer blamed it on 95ron fuel and charged him for a flush and new plugs. Joke IMO because the cap clearly says 95RON Minimum.. NOT 97RON Minimum. You'll be fine using 95ron, I just choose not too.

95 for us

Been running 95 as well with no problems and car hasn't complained.
