Winter wipers?

Featured Replies

With all this talk of winter tyres, the next most important piece of rubber on the car is arguably the wipers. Mine have been pants in this cold weather, and they are Bosch too!

Are Aero wipers any better in the cold? Or is there a specific type of wiper for the colder weather? What do our Scandinavian friends use?

I use Bosch AeroTwin and on cold weather (below -5) are rubbish!

I have mk4 golf aero wipers on mine, and they seemed fine. I did try and minimise there use though, as I expect the washer water to freeze on impact with the screen! I normally squirt the screen with some deicer and then use my wipers to clear the screen before departing for my drive. This method was fine for my 60 mile commute in the morning and evening, although I was not travelling in rush hour traffic.

I've got the Skoda aerowiper retrofits on mine and they are fine. I also use the VW screenwash concentrate which is good for -70C if used neat (I dilute it though obviously!). It did freeze on Thursday morning, but it was -10C and I must have diluted it too much (cheapskate  )

Get those from the dealer? Price?

Yes, around £20, can't remember exactly as they have been on for about 12 months now. Try your local TPS as they may be cheaper than the dealers.

the best wipers i have ever seen came on my old levin that came on it when it came from japan. they were PIAA silicone wipers that leave a coating on the widscreen. in heavy rain the water just rushes straight over the windscreen almost to the point of not needing to switch them on. they were unreal in the rain so thats probably no help for picking some for icy weather.
