anyone self colour coded front grill?

Featured Replies

rather than paying a garrage price to paint the silly chrome grill, wondered if anyone done it themselves with some colour matched paint, just by sanding, primer, paint and laquer?

how did it turn out?

photos if possible

I done mine. Used halfords stuff, come out ok, if a little flat. I took my time too! Decided by the time I paid for the paints and materials to do it, the local bodyshop only wanted about £35-£40 to do it. So its off to them to be done again

really? my bodyshop wanted £180 to do the handles door mouldings and numberplate recess and grill. i thought that was steep. wouldnt mind just £35 for the chrome bit

Hummmmm, well mines black, so never fancied doing those bits. The chrome does look so much better colour coded though. Oh and I lied, here`s a piccy, all be it very old.

yeh its a hell of alot nicer. ust not sure if doing it myself will work out well, especially in this weather. the cold can effect the painting im sure.....hmmm

yeah, i think damp weather is pretty bad for painting. Ask about see how much you can get it done for maybe

Matt

For little things like that try take it to a little private bodyshop. Will be amazingly cheaper. Oh and is worth telling them the skoda black magic is the same as the volkswagen black magic as they will usually have some of that floating about

you think its risky trying it myself? where do you get a spare skoda logo? or can the old one be reused?

Done a fair few now

ive heard its best to use a zinc phosphate primer as it will let the paint stick to the chrome better?

Probably best to remove the chrome altogether :)

Yeah that was my other reason for getting the body shop to do it. **** me, removing the chrome is a ballache.

The chrome just needs to be keyed up. If it's £35 to get it done professionally Wouldnt it be better to do that? It will cost about £20 in paint/sandpaper in halfords. And spray paint will always come out flat

If you can get it done between 30-40 quid get it done by a pro i did mine it cost me £20 in materials.

im going to 3m carbon mine when the weather picks up, similar result [looks black] but cheaper emoticon-0148-yes.gif

heres a pic of mine, i also painted the skoda logo and painted the rims aswel,

I`v seen a few cars with that done, it looked ok, but kinda rough, almost like they had gone a bit hazy over time where it`d been washed.

Matt

Here's mine. Removed the badge and filled the recess.

see i feel doing it by spray paint doesnt make it as glossy as by a spray gun, just seems to go on flat. will need to shop about for a body shop that will do it for a decent price.

:wonder: hmm.. one can get decent enough results when you prep it properly..

2-3coats of primer

2-3 coats of paint

2 coats max gloss spray

sand/wet+dry every layer, leave time to dry each layer...

ofc my car is black so tbh its not much difference, so I didnt make much effort :giggle:

would rather get a spare chrome bit incase i mess it up lol, will try local scrappies. best place to get a new skoda logo?

Mines Di-noc'd. Been on around a year and so far not a single

hole in it caused by stone chips etc,

It's surprisingly durable.

It's not wise to get wax on it as it's a pain to remove the chalky white residue.

This is caused predominantly by the vinyl being textured.

Great for looks but not so great for cleaning.

A wise old Scotsman ;) suggested that a clearcoat sprayed over the Di noc

might improve the situation but I'm worrried it might damage the vinyl with the

strong solvents found in Laquer. :(

If I had an off cut I might have a tester try but I don't want to ruin the finished article

while I learn how to apply laquer. ( Never done it before....)

However.... All is not lost. It comes up with just the right amount of shine if you use

a decent trim shine gel/liquid. I use The Chemical Guys Trim and Tyre restorer on mine and it

cleans up and reblackens lovely using that stuff. Does a great job of the tyres too while I mention it.

If you do get wax on it try rubbing it off with a pencil rubber.
