Driving across Europe for charity in a s**theap banger!

Featured Replies

Hi all, me and a few mates next year are going to be driving a few days next year across Europe as a funny little trip and to raise some money for a charity. We looked into doing the scumball rally, wacky rally etc etc but thought It doesn't warrant the money you sign up for. That fee could ultimately end up going towards charity, and it's not hard to find a few camp-sites across Europe to pitch up on.

One issue was raised though, we are all under 21 so I have no idea how to get around insurance, we were thinking of doing a pay monthly policy where obviously it covers driving abroad and also just cancel it after the weeks driving for the cooling off period which most give you, is that okay to do?! As long as all drivers are named on the policy this is not a problem right? We looked into the banger rally cover but no one would temp. Cover under 21 year olds.

Another was what car to use? We were thinking something diesel and more than likely estate but we're not massively fussed about economy more uniqueness and reliability (will probably end up giving the car away in the end).. so if anyone has any ideas what to use for less than £500 and will get us there the funnier the better! (As long as we could insure it, that is) An old volvo springs to mind

Any past experiences/opinions would be great, thanks!

Thanks!

Lew

I'm always amazed at how little you can get a Lexus LS400 for - that is one big ol' luxury barge that! As for insuring it, maybe another issue there, and not one I can help with either I'm afraid. I wish you all the very best

Why not take the Octy??

Not sure how you will get folks to give you money though for going on holiday round europe with a few mates.

No fun if it was in one of our cars, not really the same if the car isn't sprayed pink or something, it is gonna be for charity after all, you'd be suprised i got a few hundred quid for walking up a mountain so I don't see why a week away round Europe in an old shed won't cause the same effect :)

toyota Hilux!

Something you can fix with a couple of spanners and a big hammer.

Old Land Rover

Mini cooper

2CV

Trabant

Audi 80

Volvo 940

If you're feeling brave an old Alfa.

A colleague of mine and his co-driver took a Mk3 Golf to Africa somewhere for charity, which suited them well enough...

My sister drove across Europe in an old BMW 318 for charity a couple of years ago

I've done this a few times. If you're all under 21 then you're going to have a nightmare with insurance but you'll have to bite the bullet and pay for it.

With cancelling the insurance once you've finished you have over lookedthe fact of a cancelation fee. Don't worry fella in 2013 I'm rowing across the Atlantic just to take part in the race costs 15000 quid! All in the name of charity hey!

Cancel the direct debit. Insurance will lapse without the cancellation fee.

I had that argument with Endsleigh a few years ago, wouldn't insure me (postcode database out of date), but wouldn't let me cancel without a fee. Cancel the dd end of story and tbh you usually get a month free while they chase you.

Ah, cracking idea mate! Like you see on all those driving programmes like road wars, once the DD has been cancelled the insurance is invalid.

Good shout

So wouldnt that then mean in future when asked "have you ever had insurance declined or cancelled?" you`d have to answer "yes"?

matt

My brother in law and a mate did this last year in an M Reg Fiesta 1.3. It never missed a beat, cruised a 90-100 easily and they sold it for a profit afterwards :)

Nice, haha gotta be done I reckon. Volvo looks likely but we have been offered a ford escort 1.6 dirt cheap which is a minter and I've got the bonus of knowing the car too

I think there's a difference between being declined insurance and an insurer not providing you with a quote. Otherwise I reckon quite a few people who go on price comparison sites would have that problem, since (IME) there's always at least one that decides not to quote on grounds of age / car / postcode / claims history...

True, Well, we will see how it goes anyway!

Looks like I might have a 1.6 escort at a bit of a bargain price anyway :)

Looked at insuring it and its about 2600 haha

If it helps, my sister and her husband are getting a new car next week. I said I knew of someone looking for a cheap car for a charity drive across Europe and they said if it's for charity then their old car would be available for the cost of a train ticket home (they live in Sheffield)...

It's a W reg Rover 45 (1.4)...

Car Mechanics magazine did it recently with a starship mileage Merc 190.

We didn't get the escort today in the end, needed a fair whack spending on it to bring up to the condition that would be considered sound. What is the car like? I'd be very interested and could give them more money, would feel terrible just paying for a train ticket home..

That's another one that is on the cards :)

Car seems ok, they just want rid of it when the new car arrives as parking is limited where they live (no off road parking and limited on street parking). They were offered next to nothing from WBAC and I get the impression they can't really be bothered with the hassle of selling privately...

It's got about 75K on the clock, dark green, and as far as I'm aware is mechanically sound. If you're interested PM me your number and I'll get them to give you a call...
