Octavia Scout Advice please

Featured Replies

Well its been a long time but Im coming back to Skoda. :)

Im considering an Octavia scout on a PCP. I do around 15000 miles a year and live in a rural area. I looked at full on 4x4 SUV's and they were either to expensive or I did not like them! After all the snow in the last two years the scout appears to be my answer.

Im torn between the TDI 140 and the 1.8Tsi. I fancy the 1.8 for a change having spent the last 6 years owning diesels. However what's the average fuel economy like on the 1.8? Advice and thoughts appreciated.

Cheers

1.8 TSi gives to me 30 to 45 if normal driving, can fall to whatever you want if you drive hard, but the joy of this engine is over any cost :) Go for it

As said. I went from a 1.9Tdi to the 1.8 Scout.. Just dont think about the fuel it's a fantastic engine. More like a 6 and the performance. Well it's just a great drive. Would I swap to a Derv if offered a like for like. No chance !

That's better than I thought. My Jaguar 2.2D only gives me 40 MPG if Im lucky. I guess you are happy with the car?

To confuse matters, the new CRD140 engine is great too - smooth and refined, torquey, and I've had 50mpg from it being careful (although not in the recent cold weather).

I thought the TDi engine was the same as the one in my Fabia VRs all those years ago.

Very happy! I even drove 3,200 miles to Ben@Shark in UK to tune it to around 200bph to make me even MORE happy. I've done 10.000 miles for 4 months all over Europe with wife and baby and it has never missed a beat. Comfy, secure handling, massive overtaking power, quiet, huge boot and worry free of any problems that diesels bring.

As previus Poster said the engine is now 2.0 common rail diesel with 140ps.

The new CR diesel engines are much quieter and smoother.

For small cars or sports cars, I would prefer a petrol, but when you are doing 15k miles in a car like the Scout, the diesel looks very attractive, not just from a fuel economy standpoint, but for the torque.

Be careful when people quote MPG, this is often from the trip computer which often means at best it's optomistic at worst inaccurate.

My 2.0 PD Scout rarely manages more than 38 MPG.

I drive down to London once or twice a month, a round trip of almost 500 miles. I average somewhere in the early 40's, despite the trip computer telling me I'm doing 55+ MPG.

I'd be very suprised if the 1.8 TSi manages 45 MPG.

The only way to really know for sure is an extended test drive with both engines.

I love the PD for its punchy torque, not driven the new CR so not sure what it's like...

I've just taken delivery of my 140 DSG CR Yeti and love it - you are not considering a Yeti? The other half was looking at a DSG Scout and we went to see James at Allams two weeks ago. Great discounts can be had with the VAT free deal on the Octavia I have to say (but not on the Yeti or Superb). But if you don't get that the Scout is very pricey since there is no Elegance trim level and all the nice goodies have to be added as pricey options - not so clever come resale time.

But back to your question re the engines. James also told us that you will get the 1,8 much, MUCH faster than the short supply diesel. DSG TDI delivery was qouted as June and 1,8 petrol delivery a fair few months earlier. So if you want it sooner than later you know which to get!

I waited good few months for Yeti so i pushed the purcahse till i saw it and when i went to test drive it, the boot with full size spare was a joke, back seat space was small too, and the car seeing it with your eyes just didn't look "normal" compared to pictures. Was gutted, as i really wanted the Yeti, but went for Scout as i could not live with boot size and the looks.

I love my 2.0 TDi PD Scout and it has been excellent this winter (and last). even on rubbishy summer Dunlop Sports. If I was buying new now I would seriously consider the 1.8 petrol. My Scout gets about 39mpg (brim to brim test) on mixed driving and I don't flog it so I don't think that is such a great advantage over the petrol to be worth the extra cost. I know the torque is excellent on the diesel and this was a consideration for me because I tow a sizeable caravan. I've been thinking about selling our Yaris and buying a petrol Scout to go with the other one but SWMBO keeps knocking that idea on the head.

Exactly the same as mine.

Strangely I too was considering selling our aging Peugeot 306 with another Scout for the wife.

She does less than 10,000 miles a year so I don't think another diesel would make sense.

Problem is I'd be looking at used, which currently means they are as rare as hens teeth!

I have had my 1.8TSI since may2010 , I always had Xtrails 2.2 dci.The scout returns about the same MPG as the XTRAIL, but petrol is cheaper, and the 1.8TSI is a pleasure to drive ,so smooth and great acceraration, and no lean on the bends.I do not think I will go back to a SUV again.

I only do about 10K a year so the 1.8TSI v the TDI is a no brainer for me.However if you tow a van then the TDI has more torque, it is then not so easy to choose..

How would the petrol model fare as a tow car compared to the CR Diesel?

The diesels have more torque, so I would think they would tow better.

I have the CR TDI Scout, but commute across the pennines every day, averaging 35k miles per year. Its a pretty arduous drive IE all hills, country lanes, traffic, lorries etc etc, and I am averaging about 39mpg too.

I had it remapped the other week, which has seen the fuel economy rise by a couple of MPG, and now produces just shy of 180PS so overtakes are possible too!

Love my Scout!! :)

The diesel common rail engine has been available in the Scout since Spring 2010 - the CO2 output drops from 173g/km to 155, with a proportionate improvement in fuel economy. I do about 10k per year, so the diesel is marginal but I like the torque and relaxed power delivery. The new unit is far quieter than the old, even on cold idle, so worth a test drive.

The diesels have more torque, so I would think they would tow better.

Looking at the figures, the Diesels have more torque (320 to 250) on the petrol, however from reading various posts it would seem that the 1.8 petrol unit has very good low down torque which is all important for towing a caravan.

As I type this, I have just found out that my CR Diesel Scout (which has been on order since June) has now been put back to January. Marvellous.

Think the CR engine came before spring this year mate, mines a Jan 2010 car.

I've had a Scout TDi PD 140PS for nearly 3 years now. The car has been faultless in that time. It is brilliant in the snow, ice and wet. The torque is great. The car is really planted and very secure-feeling. It makes a great towcar too. I agree with other posters that fuel economy is not it's strong point. I got 42 mpg (brim to brim) in the summer months and just under 40 since the cold snap and around 29 mpg towing a 1200 kg caravan.

I would go for the new CR Scout if you order before 31st December - after that it will look rather pricey. The new CR engine will give you better economy as well.

Thats weird - Skoda announced the change for MY11 i.e. from Wk 22, and I was told to delay my order to ensure a build date after Wk 22. Wouldn't surprise me if that was misinformation however.

Do you know your engine code?

How very strange! Will get the engine code...BMM....I assumed that was a CR engine, as thats what the dealer told me...I'll bet its a PD engine now!!! :S ....As you say..there appears to be a lot of misinformation flying around!!
