Brakes groaning!

Featured Replies

Evening..

I've searched this before and read countless threads about it, but I think I have something else. :wonder:

My vRS has the most god awful groan when reversing, so much so that it vibrates the cabin when reversing out of the car park at work (v. embarassing :dull: .) It only does it when I am NOT pressing the brakes though. If I touch the brakes or put the handbrake on, it stops. I read about the famous octavia moo, but from what I can tell, that only happens when you are pressing the brakes. Mine is the opposite.

Any ideas? I have replaced the front discs and pads with brembo hc discs and mintex pads, all torqued up properly.

Also, not sure if this is really relevant or not, but when I bought the car, it had almost no braking power, hence me replacing the fronts. It was owned by an old gent who went back and forth to the shops twice a week. (did 2.5k miles a year), so the brakes didn't get used that much.

Have you checked the rear discs/pads/calipers and the handbrake adjustment etc mate?

mines the same mate the passenger rear caliper has a mind of its own, the pad was wearing more that side than the drivers side rear, i think teh handbrake adjustments to high as when i reverse i getr that moaning sound when i touch the hanbrake it goes away but only does it when reversing try making sure ur handbrake leavers on the rear calipers can move and are not covered in crap and lubricate them in some wd or dpray grease that shuld help

Mine has it mate, but mine gets worse as you press the brakes.

I read it's something to do with certain brake pads etc used.

Not had a chance yet - Can't really be chuffed taking the wheels off in the snow :dull:

Yeah, will try that in the morning probably. I've read that you can get springs from audi which go on the handbrake levers to stop them sticking on. Might be worth getting some - Can't hurt.

Yeah, I read that too. I think you have the common octavia moo, mine seems to work the opposite.

Still think that is the age old mooing buddy. That is exactley what i have. And yes worse without pressing pedal.

May go for the rear caliper upgrade from Skoda and fit it myself

Does sound like the mooing, mine have done it even without touching the brakes until I fitted the kit.

Thats the moo ..................

Mine does it ....sometimes, then it doesn't ???

It started again just now as a matter fact, hasn't done it for a few months

Edit .... The kit looks great only trouble is the price  About a ton iirc ??

Yeah, shocking for what it is.

Mine does it almost all the time, only at low speed. Doesn't really bother me as how often do you reverse for any length of time??

How Bizzare... I thought it was just me.

Bought my vRS in May, one or two odds and sods needing sorting, one of them was a slightly sticking near side rear caliper.

Anyway, took the pads out, cleaned/operated the piston in and out to free it up a bit, and in recent weeks I also have a groaning/mooing sound when reversing. Worse when stone cold, or after washing the car. I am paranoid the caliper has siezed again, so find myself on slight inclines seeing if the car rolls... which it does I'm happy to report.

Thanks for the topic chaps.. feel better now!

I have just also got my 2001 auq vrs ....I bought it and it seemed to squeak when braking and also when reversing ......took it for an oil and filter change and my mate took off the passenger side rear caliper , pads/took off the slight lip on the disc, took the spring off the back of the caliper/handbrake cable ...handbrake seemed pretty free and caliper seemed ok ......it now doesnt squeak when braking but moans like mad reversing still as though handbrake is sticking !?

Is that kit the only way to stop it ?? , or would changing the handbrake cables stop the problem?

cheers

ant

The problem is the longer caliper acts like a tuning fork, a vibration in the rear beam causes a resonance in the caliper which makes the noise. The damper weight counter balances the vibration.

I just posted this to a similar topic as when I called Skoda today to order that rear caliper service kit, £104, I nearly fell of the chair. How can that price be justifed.

Kept my money and it can wait, I will put up with the mooing for a little longer..

crikey thats a lot of dough ! ....think i will also put up with it for the time being ? what will they mot guys say though when its due?

ant

Nothing to do with the MOT.

Is that all the kit is, a weight?

It seesm daft that something so small can make such a difference!

Might put up with it then.

It is something to do with altering the accoustic vibrations / frequency through the rear beam and brake calipers, and it appears to work. There was a recall on cars for this but i bet we have missed that one by now, maybe worth trying it though.

mine did it when i 1st got it 3.5 years age , realy bad.

about a year later i had the pads changed & all ok till this damn cold weather & started again...

Yeah, might try giving the stealer a ring tomorrow.

"Hi, not sure if you remember the octavia brake situation a few years back? Well......." :giggle:

let us know what they say !

No recall it's not a safety issue.

Yeah, they told me it wasn't officially recalled therefore there's nothing they can do, other then buy the part myself.

Think I'll stick with the groaning!

  • 3 months later...

Are they the right ones? They look different.

Bet you can make them fit anyway. Let us know how it goes.
