1.4/1.9 sport ?

Featured Replies

Hi have had that much trouble with fiat now I am thinking of going back to Vw group I have seen a yellow 1.4 tdi sport 10 plate for £9000 or 58 plate 1.9 sport for £8000 Plus after warranty runs out revo 80bhp takes to 115 or 105 takes to 140 ish as well thinking of car tax too? what do you think

Plenty of people on this forum will tell you to go for the 1.9TDI as it's more powerful, offers more or less the same economy and is a tad quieter. The 1.4 TDI is slower (but not by much), greener (less emissions), slightly cheaper to run (£35 road tax). Not a lot in it. If you do more than 10k a year, go for the 1.9 TDI. But the three-pot 1.4 has a lovely roar when you floor it.

Yep, agree with Adrianh1. But either one will be fine. As you may have noticed I am a 1422cc 3 pot fan. It cruises fine at an indicated 80mph, has loads of power, and will do 75mpg once it's covered 10k. The 1.9 can't quite match that mpg figure but it does have a nice bit of extra power. Top wack is higher and acceleration better if you go for the Estate version if yoiu can, plus of course there is a massive amount of extra space. Both engines are totally reliable over huge mileages as long as you use the correct oil for your engine. Don't economise on that, buy the good VW spec stuff and fully synthetic not the semi. Let us know what you go for, but do try and test drive both engines...that's bound to help you with your decision. Bests...

Can someone tell me why VW 505.01 spec oil should be fully synthetic and not semi ? surely if the oil in my 1.9 TDI Sport is changed at required interval's it should be ok

comments please

Go for the 1.9 Tdi you wont go wrong and the performance is just that bit better than the 3 cylinder 1,4 model

505.01 is fully synth and needs to be to remain stable at the pressure its under in the PD engine.

Yep...semi synthetic can meet the standard, although not many semi's are made in VW spec because it breaks down much more quickly than fully synthetic, and goes out of spec. In a PD engine, the oil type and spec is critical to the life of the camshaft because of the load the unitary injector pumps put on it. Fully syn stays in spec longer than the cheaper semi and has a stronger oil film. It's a case of you get what you pay for. If you knew how much a camshaft job cost, you'd never quibble about paying just a bit extra for the fully syn. When I teched in the trade, I replaced camshafts in 1.9PD engines with as little as 30k on the clock. This was caused by the wrong oil being used...they are sensitive to the oil used, that's all. Use the right stuff and it will last pretty much forever with out any problems. That's proven too.

What Tech1e says...better than all my wittering!;)

Just that there seems to be more 1.4 out there than 1.9 you can get a 1.4 10 plate for 9k or 08 plate for 8k ??

When I was looking for my Fabia3, my preferance was for the 1.4 diesel simply because my previous car (a Ford) had their 1.4 diesel engine. But the fabia I eventually chose has a 1.9 diesel engine. I have been very happy with the 1.9. More than enough power and am averaging around only 1.7mpg less than my Ford. Never driven the Fabia 1.4 diesel so can't comment. But I can't fault my 1.9. Hope this helps.

ford/mazda's 1.4 tdci same as vag 1.4tdi 3 cylinder? i thought the tdci 1.4 is a 4 cylinder?

The Ford and Skoda diesel engines are very different. I was simply trying to say that the Skoda 1.9 diesel isn't that far behind the Ford 1.4 diesel in fuel consumption. And these are real life figures not from the on board computers.

I'm a 1.4TDI fan myself at first I thought what had I let myself in for! But it's a cracking wee engine, I'm looking to get mine re-mapped (Did I say that!!) but for a 80BHP engine it does feel quick and nippy.
