ADSL and Caller display

Featured Replies

Just got everything up and running at my house,

Internet is via ADSL and the line has Caller display enabled, however when going through the microfilter caller display does not work. Plug phone straight into phone point and it works perfectly, just get crap call quality.

Anyone come across this and found a fix, ISP is Sky and the phone line is also provided by sky (LLU).

Sounds like a borked filter, as caller display should work fine. In-laws have Sky LLU and caller display works fine.

Try it at the main socket with the extensions disconnected as it may be bad internal wiring that's bringing the quality down.

The filter is the cheapo one that comes with the dlink router, i wonder if its worth getting a better quality one.

its also worth pointing out that the caller display data on an incoming call disrupts the broadband connection and causes downloads to fail, so is this the cheap filter?

You really need to start with the basics first.

Does the main socket have a removable half plate? If so you can remove it and put the computer directly to the socket inside. The extensions are wired to the removed plate so that should give you the best possible connection.

If it doesn't then make sure any OTHER phones etc also have a microfilter fitted as that can cause problems.

I'll await the results....

As others have said caller display shouldn't affect broadband on ADSL.

I'll have a play on Sunday, going back to Stevenage shortly from Dorset.

I'll also point out, this is a recomissioned line from the previous tennant who also had Sky broadband (rented property). The routers and microfilter are brand new, there is only one phone and its plugged into the same filter as the router. When the router is powered off and the phone is still connected to the filter, the caller display works still. However power up the router and it stops.

Even though it's a old line, the previous tenant may have had the same problems as you and even though you say you've only the one phone, that doesn't mean there aren't extensions (with iffy wiring) that are causing the problem.

It may pay you to get one of these to solve it once and for all! Sky will also do a line test for free.

Silly question, but as you have sky broadband do you also have the lead that connects back to a phone socket from the sky box? That can often get overlooked for filters. In all other cases I've seen it's been either the filter, or a combination of a filter and a line with a noise threshold on the very edge of acceptable.

I have Sky LLU in my house, and caller ID works fine, so I would definitely suggest the microfilter was at fault.

I have now replaced the microfiltter with a decent quality active one instead of the cheapo passive ones that come with the router. This filter is much heavier and feels better put together, and the result is success. My caller display and broadband are now working as they should be, so it seems that the cheapo filters dont like being on the extremities of the network.

Before ordering I tried both the supplied filters and neither of them worked properly.
