wireless router problems

Featured Replies

having some issues with range on a linksys router and randomly dropping connection. could it have anything to do with the placement of the router itself?? it sat very close to the monitor with a small speaker on top of it, could this impair the signal?

it might do, heat might also be an issue...

Guessing the speaker has magnetic shielding, that might cause some kind of interference, but I wouldn't think it would be that bad...

Try moving the router around, you might find that it is down to position.

Other than that, try getting the latest firmware for the router, might be something which increases the signal strength...

and btw the speakers are proper PC speakers, its this set here so shouldn't really be a problem but worth asking

Yeah, figured they would be, hence they'd be shielded - have you tried moving them out of the way?

tried nowt yet, the fun starts now. don't quite know where to put it now

Do you have some kind of strength indicator, or are you getting a message saying you have lost the connection?

strength is all good then it just dies i think. don't think its the laptops as we had one on either side of the house the otherday and it worked fine peer to peer like, i can go down stairs while connected and it will work in the kitchen for the first 5 mins then lose the connection and never get it back, can even drop while 3 meters from the router

What OS is it Bengie?

I used to have a similar problem, but mine would re-connect itself.

Hmm...doesn't sound much like the positioning then. Do you have WEP on, and if so, at what strength? Have you tried installing the latest drivers for the network device...or is it Centrino?

my laptop is centrino but my brothers is normal on-board wireless(same thing really) and no WEP turned on. just tried the moving round the house thing again. connect upstairs fine, walk down stairs and still all good, 2 minutes later the connection fails even though it has 5/5 and 54mb. bloody wireless

I have heard of problems with Centrino, but if it's happening with more than one network device, it probably is the router - complain to Linksys and get them to fix it... :D

SHUT IT you slag :finger:

After reading the other wireless thread...I take it that you have 2 routers, and both are dropping the connections to your laptop...is that right?

Does anyone else nearby have a wireless network that you know of?

As ventmore says, check for other local networks - the laptop may be seeing them as stronger signals and trying to jump to them.

Also, do you use bluetooth? I thought that could interfere with wifi? (or was that microwaves? or both?)

i do have 2 routers but they are at different houses and both act the same, neither can find other networks in range and no bluetooth plugged in at the mo at home and none at swmbo's

Did you try disabling "Wireless Zero Configuration"? It has to be a problem with the laptop setup if both routers are doing it.
