grating sound from abs, braking on ice/snow

Featured Replies

Hi,

Have Octavia 4x4 which I bought second hand a few months ago which has been great with the recent snow here in Glasgow. Have noticed juddering through brake pedal occasionally and grating sound coming from the front of car at same time when braking occasionally on ice/snow with the occasional slip. I assume this is the ABS kicking in but is it normal to feel this judder through the pedal with a grating noise? If not can anyone give me any ideas of the cause. Have washed the car recently thinking it may be salt/dirt on the discs but it still occurs in snow/ice. Otherwise this car is magic and have had no trouble getting the short distance to work in severe conditions. My last car was an Audi which was terrible to drive in the snow.

Cheers

John

Judder and grating, yes its perfectly normal and means the ABS and ESP are working as intended.

Can understand the judder but what causes the grating noise?

The noise is caused by the valves in the hydraulic controller of the ABS brakes, which modulate the brake fluid pressure going to the brake assembly.

Some of it is also the mechanical noise caused by the brake pad scraping on the disc.

Its completely normal and no need to worry about it.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies, relieved its nothing to worry about. How is the weather in Finland?

John

I agree. Same noises from my VW Passat B5.5 and current Octavia in snow/ice.
