Retro fit Passenger Air Bag Switch

Featured Replies

Hi,

With the imminent arrival of my first born I'm now regretting not getting a car with the passenger air bag deactivation switch. Has anyone every fitted one of these to a VRS which left the factory without? I'm hoping that the loom is already there and I just need to invest in switch and housing. But then life is like that isn't it; nice and easy......

Cheers,

Peter

No there isnt a loom there for it, and wiring it in from scratch to the control unit isnt really possible let alone safe.

Bugger! Ok, thanks.

Safer in the back any way!

Get an Isofix seating system, That way the seat is fixed to the structure of the car, And not just secured with the seat belts!

I spoke to Skoda about this when we went to look at a Roomster Scout - they said if you ask them t and sign a consent form then they can perminantly disarm the p/s airbag using vagcom??? Descided against it (the car) in the end

There was an article about 20 years of Isofix a few months ago.

One stat I remembered is that placing newborns in an isofix rear child reduces injury risk by 64% over the best front child seat. It also said the next significant step will be to ban young children and newborns from the front passenger seat (some US states are already doing this).

Why would you want to put a newborn in the front seat?

Didn't think the Fabia Mk1 was ISOFIX compatible? Or is there a mounting kit you can buy? I note the Octy2 has the points there and ready.

I'm pretty sure the eyes are there on a Mk.1 Fabia. Skoda sells an Isofox child seat for the Mk.1 and fitting Isofix child seats is shown in the manual.

isofix is 2005my on iirc, none of mine have had them.

My Mk1 VRS has isofix and its great for my lad. Also sooo easy to install the car seat and saves so much time even swapping the base from my wifes car.

Peter, the only issue I have is that the bugaboo doesn't fit in the boot of the Fabia so I have just put a deposit on an Octavia estate as kids have sooo much gear you need to take when you go away

mines a Sept 2004 54 plate if that helps

I'm looking at a 2001 (51) Fabia right now and it has Isofix.

What do the Isofix look like? and are they under the carpet because I've never seen and hope loop kinda mounting hardware in my 2004 car.. and it's got the 3x3point rear belts, revised seats.

It is in the PDF manual... but that's for 2005 onwards.

Metal hoops under the bottom of the rear seat back rest.

Nope, pretty sure I don't have anything like that... And I've had the bases out for about a month now (moving stuff about) so I'm sure I'd have noticed them getting in the way.

dude they are only small. They are right by the seat belts, very small loops 3 or 4"

You're not looking hard enough ;)

That is an odd un, never seen an early one with iSO FIX.

So more than likely a 2005 MY

I didn't have a really good look, but they didn't seem to be retrofit like some of the Audis have (there was no bar). They felt the same as those on the Mk1 Octavia.

The car is a Petrol Fabia Estate 1.4 16v.

I will have a better look tomorrow

Fair play, didn't know they'd been an addition on later cars. All my MY04 Fabias haven't had them, being all pre-facelift.

Update...

I had a good look and it definitely came out of the factory with Isofix.

The owner tells me that his wife's Fabia didn't come with Isofix even though it is a later version of the same car. He says that it was standard on his car and thinks it disappeared sometime in the middle of 2001. His wife was less than pleased "that a safety feature was taken off" and complained. He remembers that at the time he bought his, the 16v models had it but the MPIs didn't.

There are a couple of diesel Fabias of similar age near me and they don't have Isofix.

I just assumed that the Fabias would have Isofix because the Octavias do. Just goes to show you can't assume anything with VAG.

I use to work for Halfords and was one of the guys who fitted the car seats - when we were trained by Britax on how to fit the seats it was mentioned that the Isofix has been around for about 18 years (remember it was a couple of years ago) and that it wasnt made a std size gap between the mounts until 2004 - so that previously manufacturers would only be able to sell their own make/size of seat - after 2004 the size was standardised and thats when the seat manufacturers started selling them
