Volkswagen has come up with an unconventional solution for a rash of navigation thefts afflicting Dutch vehicle owners. From what we can gather, thieves are particularly fond of the company's RNS 310 and RNS 510 navigation systems, resulting in an apparent break-in epidemic. To help get the situation under control, VW is now offering its customers an RNS Navi Lock. The system locks a large metal plate over the entire navigation system, theoretically obscuring the hardware and making it more difficult to steal in the process. When owners are ready to use their nav screen, they simply unlock the plate using a key and go about their business.

The system is available for the Golf, Passat and CC in Europe, but it's not exactly cheap. Buyers hoping to protect their precious navigation systems can expect to shell out around 219 euro for the armor plating. Pricey? Sure, but it's likely less than the cost of repairing break-in damage and replacing the whole system.

I wonder if Skoda will offer the same as I have read of a few thefts on the Octavia forum.

In fact, thinking about it, using a Stoplock with the wheel set so the bar is across the face of the unit will be just as effective a way of providing physical security, I reckon...

I like the idea of using the stop lock

ie Lying in wait and then wacking the stop lock over their heads!

OK not very PC but personally I'm sick of people who can't keep their hands off other peoples property

Your right it's not PC! I was thinking more like a pick axe! :swear:

It makes me realise just how lucky I am living here and not needing all these security items. I have left the car unlocked all night several times, and even went out last night and forgot to lock the shop up.

In my country they wont steal your navi unit , they steal your car. :D So that is why we put different kind of protection as: zeder lock, maxx lock, hudiny lock, Multlock, cobra alarm system, construct lock and similar. First three lock your steering wheel, multlock and construct gearshift, and cobra alarm electrical protection. My father has Touareg and he has Hudiny lock, it is lock with Kesso lock, really good for protection. As for your case, maybe it is stupid but I would install plastiglass windows, they cant brake that. :)

That is what has put me off a decent sat nav system all these years, b4stards :(
