Simple question, i was looking at these. There was a 100 CEL, and a 200 CEL. Difference? Is one just more restrictive than the other?

Matt

Just De-cat it. :giggle:

I would, but i`m thinking ahead for these new emission limits if/when they happen ;)

I've been one of the people raising the new MOT standard again and again and I'm currently in Germany where they actually do all the stuff that's about to come in and the amount of changes that will have to be made to comply is unreal.

Every vehicle is supplied from new with a document that shows it's specification (Fahrzeugschein).

This lists things like the emissions standards, tyre sizes, wheel sizes, bodywork fittings eg. spoilers

If you want to modify the car, you have two options;

1. You take it to a company that has a TÜV approved modification that you want done. They make the modification and send the old Fahrzeugschien plus the amendment to the local govenrnment office where they issue a new one with the modification listed.

2. You make the modifcation yourself and you take it to a TÜV testing station where they check it complies with the original vehicle specification and then they send the old Fahrzeugschein plus the amendment to the local office. If it doesn't comply, you have to remove the modification there and then or they call the police as you drive away.

To give you an example of how bureaucratic this system is, I went to the local German Audi dealer for some winter tyres (which became a legal requirement after I arrived and no-one told me beforehand). They couldn't supply me with 18" winter tyres because Audi don't list 18" tyres as a fitment for winter on the TT. OK, I said, sell me a complete set of winter wheels in 16" or 17" and they said no. They couldn't sell me a modifcation that Audi's own system said was for my car because they couldn't match the sale against a Fahrzeugschein number on their system. In the end I bought a set of 18" winter tyres from ebay Sweden and not far off bribed a small garage to fit them.

Can you imagine such a system in the UK? You want a set of 17" alloys for your car, but the Fahrzeugschein says only 16" is approved, so you can't have 17" until a modifier puts them through some form of approval process.

That's why I'm starting to think it won't happen for some time to come. German tuners like ABT and MTM feature the "TÜV Geprüft" logo on their websites and literature because without it you can't sell aftermarket stuff in Germany. It's coming here eventually, but I think the sheer scale of the system is so great it won't be any time soon.

To answer your original question the CEL count is the number of catalytic cells per square inch in the convertor and it's not quite the case but roughly doubling the CEL count quadruples the restriction and tripling it cubes it etc. so a CEL200 is roughly 4 times as restrictive as a CEL100 and a CEL300 is 10 times more restrictive than a CEL 100.

It was our little "discussion" that got me reading about it. :giggle: It sounds so OTT, i`m sure it makes them a fair few quid too, all the tests and paperwork! I dont have too much of a issue with sensible stuff, and the emission stuff i could kinda see coming anyway. I understand why all the coilover kits have "tuv" ratings too. No more ditching the adjust cups for use anymore to get a couple of extra cm drop :rofl: Just have to keep fingers crossed it doesnt happen, or that it takes years.

Matt

Thanks for answering the question BTW lol
