Paranoia or Diesels drive crap in this weather?

Featured Replies

Over the past week, I've noticed the engine to be a bit juddery/misfirey if the road conditions slow down, and the engine revs fall to say 2100rpm or below. So say you slow down in gear and then start to accelarate again it will start to shake/judder

I guess it's like the flywheel failing feeling, and/or missfiring.

The way around it is to drop a gear and keep the revs up.

It's not like a major issue, it's just something that didn't happen before.

For what it's worth, the car's always been run on BP Ultimate + Millers Diesel Ecomax stuff

Cold weather or mechanical issues starting?

In my experience with 306 D-Turbos (Saving for a VRS), turbo diesels love cold weather

They do, but for some reason the fuel consumption is crap compared to summer running. If my addled memory serves the 306 liked nothing better than great gobfuls of -5C air into the intercooler (which oddly was a fair bit bigger than that on the vRS?).

The main issue with the vRS in this weather is getting any traction!

Diesels run very well when its freezing cold, one of the joys of hearing struggling petrol engines firing up first thing in the morning :giggle:

But you will find fuel consumption will drop mines just above 40mpg, i usually get 55mpg! But this is with the heater beaming on, demist screens and all the other toot you use when its this cold...

ROLL ON SUMMER

I know some people have often mentioned how they struggle to drive it in the ice and snow. Ill be arnest its been nothing but superb for me. We live in a very hilly area, and the amount of cars and 4x4s getting stuck was quiet amusing. Fazed very little challenge for the fabia, couldnt be more happyer with it. Shes got me home safe and sound many times

Yeh mines been fine in these conditions. And mine also feels like it is enjoying the cold weather it's freeing up the rev range

mine is running a little better once its warm and up and running does anyone elses engine sound 'rough' on first start up in the morning. just doesnt sound as smooth as normal in the really cold weather.

Yeh mine sounds quite rough on a morning, but once its warmed up, its very torquey :D

yea mines a little rough for the first second or so, and then better again once warmed up a bit

just the sort of answers i wanted to hear :D

Sounds more like mechanical issues. Work collegue had cambelt changed on his vRS and had low speed juddering after, seems they got the timing out when they put the new cambelt on.

Diesels will be a bit rougher when they first start up in this weather. They rely on heat in the cylinders to burn the fuel, if the air is at -5C then going in then the combustion is not at its best until the metal in the cylinders has warmed up a bit when they will run fine.

All engines should run better in cold weather as the air will contain more oxygen so combustion will be better and more fuel can be burned more efficiently.

for people who think their cars run better... with a FMIC you get the same feeling all year long emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Had a similar juddering feeling in my vrs.Put some wd40 in the end of the 4 plug leads and it should feel better.Did on mine anyway!

My car loves this cold weather with the FMIC fitted

Eh?

Eh?

Hoping he means the wires going to the glowplugs, otherwise someone got ripped off with their petrol vRS

I finally got mine started after two turns of the key! :giggle:

It was -10 in Birmingham at 7:30am today. The car did sound proper rough an all......but once it got going it drove like a peach...
