Petrol or Diesel VRs estate?

Having had something of a shock looking at the delivery times for the CR VRs today on the thread i'm after advice & opinions!!

Have got a CR VRs estate ordered last week :) Was told & arranged for delivery for mid-March!! Having read some of the posts today is this going to be realistic? :giggle:

So, if it is 6 months is it any better for the petrol? :S

If so, i could probably get the DSG for the same price as the CR, is it worth getting? I only do around 10-12000 miles a year.

Or, do I take a massive leap into the unknown & go for a Fabia VRs estate :o (White, black/anthracite alloys)

Will ring the dealer to clarify the delivery situation tomorrow.

Any suggestions welcome :)

For your mileage it would be pointless going for the diesel. The petrol is cheaper, quieter, faster and still relatively economical. I can get 42-43 mpg no problem at all on a motorway run and 30-32 around town.

DSG is an absolute dream, my dad has recently picked up a fabia 1.2 TSI 105 with DSG and its fantastic - makes me wish I had went for it!

With that in mind, do you then go for the Fabia or Octavia? :S

Fabia is smaller, not quite as quick, more economical, has the 7speed box & around £5000 cheaper!!

The CR will still be worthwhile getting even with your mileage (still save more in fuel than the extra cost and that is without the extra resale value of the CR). The petrol is a little bit quicker but in the real world there really is not much between them and a good driver in a CR will be quicker than an OK one in a petrol. The way they drive is different too but if used to diesel engines then you will be fine with the CR. If however you like high reving engines then the petrol may be better. The long wait for a CR would be a bit of putting though. Both cars are great so you will not be dissappointed with either one.

No brainer, go for petrol dsg, very smooth and quiet. You get smoother power delivery and takes less time to warm up. The other benefit is theres far less to go wrong with a petrol like no DPFs, busted DMFs and failing injectors, melted wiring looms and imploding fuel pumps!

I'd bodyswerve the DSG though I've had two DSG cars and both have been awful. Over on the Audi TT forums (the TT was the first DSG equipped car, so they feel it's "their" gearbox) they reckon 5-6% of all DSG/S-tronic boxes have serious issues during the warranty period. That's a fairly high likelihood of having a problem. Usually it's mechatronic units failing, but other bits fail too. If you're only keeping the car within the warranty period then fair enough it won't cost you anything, but the pain of having to have the car at the dealer is bad enough.

I have to say i saw pics of a white fabia VRs estate on the Fabia forum & it looked pretty sweet! B)

Dont you think that your comments regarding diesel's are somewhat excessive and derogatory.

Consult your dealer because apparently if you cancel a CR diesel order and order a petrol they'll offer you a further £1000 off!

The secondhand market in general wants diesel estates.

I say petrol too for the milage - diesel starts to make sense once you go past 14k miles a year or so, but below that and petrol is the cheaper option (and you don't sound like a taxi!). The new Fabia vrs is a good car, very nearly as quick as the octy on a smaller engine (less weight to pull), and subjectively it will probably feel quicker being a smaller car (and may give better mpg but I've not looked at the figures), but the main issue for you should really be in regards of cabin space and load carrying, The Octy is obviously a very large car (even the hatch has a massive boot space), but if you can do without it (ie you haven't got kids!) then the fabia would probably be a good choice given the cost savings - but try a test drive in both and see what you think!

You originally chose a diesel. Stick with it. It will be worth the wait. You will regret it in 12 months time if you buy something else to tie you over.

No-one knows what you like to drive, so only you can truly know what you want.

I have a PD diesel, and I was impressed by how much nicer the CRs are. Smoother and quieter. Also, take a look at second-hand values - the petrols depreciate much more than the diesels.

I really like my DSG box too :thumbup:

How would an Elegance 1.8TSi DSG compare to the petrol VRs? Obviously not as quick but has the 7spd box.

Its around £1800 cheaper & better fuel efficency, but not as quick. :S

You will lose a lot of the vRS qualities not just the speed i.e. more sporty set up etc.

It just depends on what you want from a car. The 7 speed DSG is the one I have tried in my dads car and its fantastic.

If you do go for the Elegance and want to squeeze a little bit more performance out of it try having a look at a remap. Had mine done from Shark when it had 2000 miles on it, clocked over 20k now with no problems and its a completely different car.

All things to consider but only you can decide :giggle:

If I went for the elegance I think i'd get the 17's with the sports suspension & remap at some point in the future :)

When I order my latest VRS I looked at the Elegance and L&K spec cars as well. I ended up ordering the VRS as I prefered the seats and styling etc. of the VRS. I wanted a VRS and even if the Elegance and L&K had more toys I would have still felt I was missing something.

Whether this applies to you only you will know.

For fun, I'd go for the petrol vrs. However, after weighing up the financial side, I went for the diesel. I've nearly halved the fuel bill from my old car, although that was a 3 litre straight six, and liked a drink. I would think the petrol vrs sits somewhere between the 2 in terms of fun and economy.

If you want one this side of June next year, you'll have to go for the petrol!

I do 10-12k a year and went for petrol. Test drove both back to back. Petrol noticeably quicker and more responsive.

Also lighter, cheaper & less likely to go wrong.

It's a fabulous engine! Torquey & revvy at the same time!

Do it! You won't regret it. You get the car much sooner too.
