ps3 - easy to fix?

Featured Replies

Thinking of buying a cheap non working ps3 off ebay. I'm happy to open it up and rip to bits. Are they reasonably easy to fix if you're willing to have a go?

Anyone got any free links to good repair guides?

Cheers,

Martin

YLOD fixes are a bit hit and miss..

Best to aim for one that's not reading discs or something.

I have HDD, BD-ROM and wireless card from a 40GB PS3 that you're welcome to if you buy one say with a dodgy BD-ROM Drive.

Duff Blu-ray drive is the easyest fix,

Can get a lazer for £30, 20 min fix. iv done 2. Easyer to change the Lazer as the board on the drive itself is paired to the Motherboard.

Take lid off = T10 Anti Vandle bit - 6ish cross head screws - power and ribbon cable - 4 Mini screws - take apart carfully undoing all ribbon cables - 4 screws for Lazer and Caddy - reassemble - Do it 3 more times getting the load mech to work properly (my first one saw me take the drive apart 7 times to get to to work right) Enjoy gaming

YOLD - Not always a stable fix. (not even by the pros)

Done 1 which i know had to be done twice.

Full Strip down - Heat 2 proccessers with hairdryer till HOT! - cool quickly with cold setting on hair dryer - reapply thermal paste - reasemble - Leave to room temp -see how long you get.

Managed to get 1 week out of the first fix on it, then i just got it working to Backup all the Data.

HDD - not always just a HDD fail, can be a full YOLD

Buy a 2.5" 5400RPM SATA laptop HDD (less than 1TB)

Download latest firmware off sony onto pen drive.

Install Hdd - Plug controller in with USB - boot up(this is where we see if its YOLD) - Insert USB Pen - follow on screen instructions.

Dont worry about formatting the pen to FAT32 it reads the files off a pen drive in NTFS format (for some reason)

I am going with KEV here.... Faulty Blueray drive, but see photos/video/demo of it working.

dont worry about no controller - Plug one in with the USB and it pairs that way.

Dont worry about no power lead - its just a kettle lead.

If you get no pic come up with the HDMI plugged in hold the power button on the console till it bleeps 3(IIRC) times, boot s in SD mode and you can set it up for HD mode.

Just a brag time: My Ps3 is currently 500Gb B) is is a FAT one that used to be 40Gb

If all else fails, you could replace the guts with a George Foreman and call it a George Formby grill..Seen it done..
