Is this a good price?

Featured Replies

I already have the thermostat, seal and antifreeze (two bottles of G12++) but need the CV joint and whatever other gubbins are required for its replacement. While I'd normally do the thermostat myself, it seems that getting to it can be a bit of a PITA in the 1.8T, and I don't have the confidence to tackle the CV joints.

I've been quoted £250 including VAT and parts (except those I already have) by a VAG specialist. This sounds good to me but I'd welcome a few second opinions before committing.

Just had another quote from an independent Skoda specialist (formerly a dealer) for £220 all in: £50 for fitting the thermostat and £170 for the CV joint (pattern parts).

(The first Skoda dealership I called wanted £327 for the CV joint parts alone!)

iirc the cv joint is part of the drive shaft so you have to buy the complete shaft and not just the joint which is why its so pricey. they normally work on exchange basis?

I had my thermostat changed yesterday at local independent VAG specialists.

Thermostat and O-ring supplied by me (had it in the shed for months, but never got round to doing it as it is a PITA to change)

£38.19 including topping up with G12++ and VAT.
