Should I sign up for the Freedom section ?

Featured Replies

hello folks,

i know I need to pay to sell something on the Freedom section of the site.

Before doing so, it would be useful to know whether members consider this to be a good place to sell or not?

This is obviously a great, active forum so i presume the sales/buying section within Freedom is active too ?.

Not keen on spending £12 to advertise, if there are few Freedom members, or if barely anthing is bought or sold on there.

Its been a mad, crazy month of unexpected bills, capped off today by an estimated £650 to replace the clutch on my 1.9 4x4.

So, got an expensive Skoda part i need to sell to finance the clutch

Thanks for any advice ;)

I don't mind paying to work here, if it helps...???

You don't need to be a freedom member to buy so you have the full viewing of all users of the site. If it's a part that is going to be popular then your £12 spend could be worth it. Plus you get that nice green feeling that only comes with being a freedom member! B)

Ah, thanks.

Didn't realise i could take a look at the Buy/Sell section without already being a paid up member

Will take a look to see how active it is

cheers ;)

Depends what it is

Also, you can probably do better than that £650 clutch price too! What parts does that cover?

Thats a fully fitted clutch kit, fitted at West End Skoda Broxburne, Scotland.

As its the 1.9 4x4 (and possibly more complicated than a 2x4), i figured it was sensible to go to someone familiar with that car.

Problem not yet been diagnosed by a mechanic (other than a bloke with a socket set - i.e me), but having spoken to Graham at Broxburne

it seems the most likely.

Random difficutly in getting in and out of 1st and reverse gears. Sometimes as smooth as silk, sometimes a real struggle.

No clutch slip, or any other problems.

Not noticed any fluid leaks, which would therefore tend to rule out a slave cylinder issue?

Pay and support the site :)

not keen on spending £12 ???

put it on ebay then and it will probably cost you a lot more.

I think you've misunderstood my sentiments. Please don't misrepresent me as someone that won't pay to sell an item

As stated earlier, i didn't understand that i could take a look at the activity in the sales section, without being a Freedom member, hence asking

for the insight of others into whether there was actually any activity in that section.

Ever paid £12 to ebay just to take a look at whats there, or paid to go into a shop to see whether they have much stuff for sale ?

Now that I've been able to have a look, I've seen that it is fairly active, and have paid up for Freedom membership (although won't show up for up to 72 hrs).

FWIW, I do think that paid membership should be compulsory for Briskoda.

It is easily the most helpful forum that i use, but there is not much incentive to pay for membership when the majority of help that anyone could ever need is generously available

for free from other member. Wasn't even aware that there was a paid option till i started looking for a "For Sale" section, so perhaps the possibility and benefits of membership could be made

more prominent?

i am a member of FFOC (which is well worth the money) and Peugeot Central ( a total waste of money as far as i am concerned as it is so inactive, but you don't

find that out till you pay your £10).

Thankfully, the Nissan X-trail forum was free - it needs to be as most threads seem to go unanswered, and there's little sense of community there IMHO

Glad to see you've decided to fully support the site.

£12 per year is nothing

Agreed - would have supported it sooner, were it compulsory, or a prominent option.

Just not this month, following an unbudgeted and unexpected £3k worth of expenditure

As far as your clutch is concerned, check out my recent thread about converting to a solid flywheel. I recently changed my 1.9TDI to a solid flywheel system and conplete brand new clutch for under £500 fitted.

Thanks for the useful info.

You did that at an independent right ?

i think the clutch for the 4x4 is way more expensive as its possibly a heavy duty item?

lthough i imagine the labour charge is the same

Edited by Monkeyboyo

Can't comment on the 4x4 clutch type, but someone like GSF should be able to tell you and also quote you for the parts. Then if you've a known and regarded independent locally, it could be fitted there.

FWIW I had the exact symptoms you describe on my 2.0TDI PD140 and they were cured by a clutch change. I also renewed the gearbox oil while it was in, and I'd recommend that too. Total cost for that was less than £300. Obviously excluding any flywheel work.

Steve

Clutch for the 4x4 is the same as the 2wd clutch.

Usually if a clutch is on the way out its going to effect all gears not just two, unless its because your stationary when selecting 1st or reverse.

Thanks Steve.

Just sourced an LUK clutch kit and Damped/Single mass flywheel at Buypartbuy.co.uk for approx £210 inc vat

Gearbox oil too is a good idea

Yep, i think its because it is stationary.

Vw specialist mechanic i just spoke to reckons there is some manual adjustment possible for the hydraulic clutch

Apparently not self adjusting. Unfortunately, too busy till New Year to even take a look as all the folk that couldn't get their work done

over the last 2 weeks are still being attended to.

Thanks Steve.

Glad you're having luck in finding some better value options. That seems at the other end of the scale though, and excessively cheap for the kit AND flywheel!

Mine was the Sachs kit, which meant the clutch was slightly cheaper than the LUK, but the flywheel is more expensive (when I come to need a replacement). Swings and roundabouts I suppose!

Gearbox oil I'd definitely get done - has improved the quality of the change, no doubt. Plus I've not had any issues with gear selection when cold, even down to -12.

Yes, i did question that price myself - seems cheap for LUK parts.

They quoted me the wrong price, and omitted the Concentric Slave Cylinder as they reckoned it has an external slave cylinder.

Will call LUK tomorrow to get them to tell me what part numbers i need to pass on to Buypartsbuy

Good advice from Mike, particularly on the Sachs/LUK issue. I got both kits from GSF because of this, and took back the kit that wasn't required! It was the only way I could see of doing it. Why it isn't noted anywhere when the car is originally assembled I'll never know! :wonder:

The price of £300 + vat quoted and paid for mine (for parts alone) was for a Valeo SMF conversion kit, and is suitable for replacing both the original Sachs (like mine) and LUK clutches.

Just replacing the clutch means you have to get the right one for the dual mass flywheel installed in the car and according to my Skoda main dealer, there's no way of knowing which type is in the car until the gearbox is taken out and the clutch inspected. You cannot fit a Sachs clutch to a LUK DMF, or vice versa.

What I'm saying is don't commit yourself to buying a LUK clutch until you are certain that is the right one. If it's a Sachs setup in yours, it won't fit.

That's the beauty of the SMF conversion -- it will fit the car no matter what type of clutch was originally fitted.

Also before you buy, make sure they cross reference the engine code of your particular car with the parts they supply, as not all engines of one size are the same.

Mike

Yep. cheers for that Mike, and the earlier PM. ;)

I'll be fitting a clutch and SMF, and making sure they are from the same manufacturer, whether Valeo, LUK or Sachs

Nice to see there's an SMF available for the Octavia - it was not an option for the 2 Fords where i have previously had to do a DMF and clutch replacement

  • Author

Glad to be of help. You'll find the SMF conversion kit comes as a 4 part - SMF, clutch plate, clutch cover and release bearing all in the one box:thumbup:.

This is where I got mine from

www.generaltraffic.co.uk

Good luck

Mike

Exceptional help. Thank you ! ;)

I presume you didn't bother with the Concentric slave cylinder, or was that part of the kit ?

The advice in this thread is easily worth the £12 Freedom subscription! :p

In the 2 years I've been a member the advice I've received from this forum has saved me £££££'s so I paid the 20 quid for 2 years subscription, I would be lost if the forum closed, as a bonus to that as a freedom member I have sold quite a few items all of which together would have cost substantially more in ebay/ paypal fees than the pitiful amount Briskoda ask for.

Do it, support the site, and reep the benefits.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Well said

Nor me.

So why not make the payment/support option prominent?

Homepage has a big button saying Register for FREE.

And the help/advice/info available here for FREE is staggering - probably the best i've seen

i really don't think it is enough to 'hope' that people support the site financially.

I would have handed over the money earlier, had someone walked me to the cashtill
