Steering column/ rack noise?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Took the car in to the dealers this morning as I noticed yesterday when I started the car and set off that there was a knocking noise coming from either the column or the rack etc when you move the steering from side to side. If you sit there, engine running but not moving and wiggle the steering wheel there is a pronounced 'knock knock knock' as you wiggle the wheel from side to side that feels like it's coming through the floor around the front sub frame. As the car warms up though (which with a CR diesel takes about 1,000,000 miles) then the noise subsides, only to return when the temp drops again such as the following morning.

Anyone else had this or have any ideas what it might be? Either way, if there's a problem it's a warranty job - things like that should not go wrong on a 2 year old car.

I'm thinking either play in the UJ at the bottom of the column, loose or damaged track rod end or loose / damaged bolts/ bushes that hold the rack to the sub frame.

Thanks,

Chris.

Did you get this fixed Chris?, hit the mother of all potholes today with a right bang in my VRS at about 30mph, caused the traction control light to kick in. Checking the car afterwards, wheel looks unmarked but waggling my steering wheel left to right at standstill there is a knocking noise does feel like it might be transerring onto the floor/handbrake I thought i could feel it ever so slightly throught the h/brake too....could be me being paranoid and it was already doing this I just didnt notice. Seems louded than it really ought to be (tried the same wheel movement in my missus' vw golf at standstill, there was a faint bit of a knocking, much less pronounced) Car has done 76K.

Cheers
