Rant about wide single carriageway roads

Featured Replies

On my way home last night, some complete (insert your own suitable adjective) is overtaking and heading right for me despite the fact that I'm plainly visible. Why do people overtake on these wide single carriageway roads even when there is clearly oncoming traffic? And with the attitude that if YOU Don't move over then you're the one in the wrong! :wall:

It was the A64 between Seamer and Morrisons for those that know the area.

I think these roads ought to be either width restricted (back to a sensible width for single carriageway) or just converted to dual carraigeway.

Whilst not condoning speeding, I'd rather police concentrated o n prosecuting these tw@ts rather than nabbing someone for doing 75 when the road's empty.

I know the road m8 can't understand it myself I only overtake if it's clear or if people move over when I'm stuck behind a tractor. There's soo many idiots around

A friend of ours and another passenger were killed last summer on a similar road down her in Worcestershire. There are lots of these roads in quieter parts of the country. More solid white lines needed with specific overtaking for one direction have a third lane I would suggest ie with the slope or better visibility or curve. Good idea to have full lights on, auxilary ones too if one has. Imagine this happening when your on a motorcycle rather than a car!

TThis was at night so I already had lights on! I've had it the other direction too, when people think you should drive in the gutter so that they can overtake against oncoming traffic. I just hold my normal position and make them wait till it's clear. Is that wrong?

My vision isn't great in 3d. In fact I failed the police driving test before even getting to the car because I couldn't pick the 3d shapes. At night if there's a long line of traffic I sometimes struggle to spot that there's a car overtaking. Usually if the road has a slight left hand bend in it.

Didn't realise it was at night, could of been a cop car been overtaken a few times at night round there by marked police cars could of been an unmarked one

I had some fool overtake me and then learner in front of me the other day. He was so desparate he crossed over a hatched area and double solid white lines on a bend to get past.

The problem is there will always be some fool who thinks they are too important or their journey is too important to pay any attention to signs and road markings.

You got a map link so we can have a look with Streetview at the area in question?

Will link one in tonight when I'm on a laptop not my phone!

At a tangent but when are Skoda going to make curtain airbags standard, and ESP preferably too. When it becomes standard then the in-biuld cost becomes less. Octy 2 is still only 4 star NCAP rating.

Always add curtain airbags. Standard on Mk 2 L&Ks but had to order as extra on TSI VRS, unbelieve in such a car. Suppose fact police use them means that through Home Office homlegation testing they are not too bad but often frightening to read the NCAPs on this and other cars.

Think it was around here tho i may be corrected My link

It's around here where i quite often get overtaken by police cars on the way back to york, i usually do around 50 as it's on a slight decline so get around 65 mpg for a mile or two and after sitting on my bumper thinking that i'm gonna speed due to me accelerating briskly to 50 and holding it there thay get bored and overtake lol

Dunno why but the amount of police cars on the a64 between scarbough and castle howard must make it one of the most enforced road in north yorkshire

It was the A64 between Seamer and Morrisons for those that know the area.

I was involved in/witnessed an accident there a couple of years back. A car overtook me as I was driving my wife's Ka. At the same time a Transit overtook a car heading in the opposite direction. The two vehicles hit each other right next to to me, showering my car in all sorts of debris. I hit the brakes, which is a good job as the car that was overtaking me bounced off the Transit and would have wiped me out. When he eventually stopped, I went to see if he was okay and the side of his car had been peeled back like a sardine tin and the offside front wheel had gone somewhere never to be found. It was an old Citroen BX estate which was in pretty bad shape anyway. He didn't want any help, the police calling or my details. The driver of the Transit came over and they both weren't bothered at all. My car was unscathed, so I left them to it and haven't heard anything since. I got the feeling that there wasn't much insurance at all and both blokes didn't want anyone being too nosey at the scene. No-one else has stopped and I was on my own with them both.

Since then, I position myself quite firmly in the middle of the lane, giving me plenty of room if I need to dive left. I also find that the vRS has enough road presence to make some people wait, but it doesn't stop the total idiots who have a death wish.

I drive the road every day and at least twice a week, I am faced with someone bearing down on me on my side of the road. The irony is that after that very brief stretch of wide road, there are no overtaking opportunities again all the way into Scarborough. They need to chill and maybe they'll live longer.

There is a main A road near where I live, which is very straight and wide in one section, however its still only two lanes. I've seen 4 cars wide down it before today. When I first moved into the area 15 years ago, it used to scare the cr**p out of me, Having driven the road a lot, I always make sure I pull well into the left now to let the idiots doing 90+ past.

The reason they won't dual it is because, it insn't wide enough for 4 lorries and a central reservation and it would cost too much to widen it, why its so wide in the first place is anybody's guess.

We got a couple of wide single carriageway roads here. When i say wide, i mean room for 4 cars width wise easy. I`m guessing this is not as wide?

Not really, no. Three can fit quite easily, four requires a deep breath and a prayer that all goes well. :D

Those ones up in MK? The ones on the outskirts of MK when approaching from Aylesbury, just after the dual carriageway spring to mind - not too bad usually, but always the odd retard forcing people over so they can get to the next roadabout 5-10 seconds before teh car infront. :(

I usually sit in the middle of my lane, then move over if I have too, but try not to leave myself too little space. If I over take on that kind of road, I'll only do so when I can see the road ahead is clear, and it means we won't be going 3 wide at all.

Theres is a reason why these type of roads are refered to as having a suicide corridor

Years ago, in the 1950's before the M/Ways were built in the 60's / 70's loads of A-roads were widened with a 2 outside lanes, and a central "overtaking" lane - commonly referred to as the suicide strip.

(I well remember the old A38 from Brum south had one for well over 100 miles to Bristol at least)

They were deadly, and I was nearly wiped out on a bike using one.

I suspect most of these super wide roads are a relic of these, with the original white lines removed or resurfaced and the central lane removed leaving 2 wide carriageways.

Yep thats the one, and a few on the outskirts of Leighton towards the A5. Been working in aylesbury past few weeks, there seems to be lots of roads with 2 or 3 lanes round that way, when there isnt really enough room for them! :giggle:

Where just abouts in Aylesbury you been working? The area by the police station with all the traffic lights stands out as being too small - get a bus or lorry in the middle lane and all the others grind to a halt. Some great planning there!:dull:

By the "gyratory" isnt it? I`m a bus driver lol, so all over the place, however, that was the most frustrating one, if i was in the middle lane, i had to straddle two lanes, causing drivers in the other lane to get the arse. Also the roundabout on oxford street i think, with the filter lane, way too tight, same with the 3 roundabout joint together

matt

Yeah, something like that - no idea how to spell it though! So you're one of the people always blocking it off then, one of the times having a small car is useful! :giggle: Ah, I hate that roundabout - esp if it's busy as the stupidlly placed traffic lights/ crossings and the filter lane mean most exits end up getting blocked by people who don't look ahead. :( Those last set of roundabouts are pointless, the lanes aren't really worth bothering with once you've entered them IMO.
