Using 1l+ of oil every 400 - 500 miles?

Featured Replies

Are you using the correct grade of oil ?

The VAG PD Diesel engine can use a lot of oil if you are not using the correct grade of oil

Have a Compression check by the garage, both a wet and dry test.

Am using the castrol edge 5w 40 tdi stuff.

And yeah will get that test done thanks

If you really are using that much oil then you'd have a blue exhaust smoke. If someone following didn't see this then ; if no leaks, perhaps vent blocked causing over pressure - oil would go into exhaust but not be burned. Try disconnecting vent from 'rocker cover' and see if clear (have a look at elephant mod as well).

Thanks for the replys all :)

So...

I filled up the oil to the top of the checkered / hashed part on the dipstick.

Ive now done just over 100 miles and it is now halfway down it.

If i have understood, that is around half a litre of oil used?

I will take off my CCV tommorrow, am i right in saying there should be NO oil inside it going into the turbo intake?

/\ there will be oil to an extent... as thats its purpose

obviously not gallons of it

I understand. But I do 100 miles a day or so...

Looked at thx ccv mod, could this possibly help it?

Okay, have decided ima take a trip to B&Q tomoz and buy some stuff for the CCV mod.

It might not help but reading on other forums it may do.

Anything is worth a shot right :)

EDIT:

I have also noticed quite abit of oil residue (like that around boost pipe joints) around the EGR.

Could a fault EGR be causing the oil loss aswell?

By the looks of things, it could be a mixture of a few things.

Opinions?

Just done the CCV pikey elephant mod.

Bit of washer waste pip and put a bottle on the end :D

Dont know if i can tell a difference atm. Feels a bit smoother i guess.

Just wondering, if i see no improvement to my oil usage, whats next?

PM Sent,I have a spare engine with 51,000miles if needed

Think its that extreme lol?

After some more research... I have found a few things.

I went to check my air filter and first noticed I could see the orange sealing... So the filter and air box wasn't properly closed.

The air filter is also fairly dirty.

I will change and make sure the filter is in properly.

Could this also be causing the oil usage?

I will also take off the air pipe to the turbo and see how badly it's gunked up.

If this combined with the ccv mod doesn't work, I'll get a compresion and leak test done.

Anything else worth trying / looking for?

Air box/filter would make i run not so well, and increase fuel consumption. So no chance there!

This is getting a **** take imo! Could just be a shagged block in that case maybe the 51k'r could be a possibility.

It's such a shame, if you didn't have these problems the car would probably look like it does in the photoshop you have done in the yellow car thread :(

Oil vapour in blow-by gases can be caused by a blocked air filter. If this is the case, the bottle on your ccv mod will fill with oil.

The other thing to check is that you are using the correct oil.

Hmm. Will change filter tomoz and check my catch bottle.

I no luck, will do. Compression test.

If that comes back bad... Sell in part ex haha.

:( really put me off these fabia's lol.

tbh i think you need to take it to someone who knows what there doing....

take a bottle of lube with you while your at it :D

I know haha.

Just trying the cheaper options first :)

my guessing after Reading about this is it's he oil rings...

Nice £800 for a rebuild lol.

For that, it's almost worth sourcing a low mileage scrapper engine and fitting that. I wonder if oil seals are gone whether there is other damage elsewhere, eg worn cam lobes, etc.

  • Author

Loves more adding to the list haha.

Im guessing i did more damage from before when i didnt even think the oil would be so low after buying it. The red light came on.

Strange that i never see the orange oil light?

How much do most places charge for fitting new engine?

Also, whats the trade in price of a vrs lol.

Got a good idea to go back to the where i brought it from... if you get me.

I have a good low mileage complete engine and you can hear it running before removal. Cambelt kit inc. waterpump would be changed with genuine parts before sale

How many miles has your engine done?

Includes everything so its just a direct bolt in replacement and you can sell all your old parts off to gain some funds back i.e. Turbo,Injectors,Alternator etc. etc.

Thanks :)

Will let ya know my findings however. :)

Yes, that is the thing. Once you have fitted a 2nd hand engine, say £1,000 all-in, using your turbo/gearbox/clutch/oil cooler, etc. The injectors in your old engine will be worth £200 alone on the second hand market. :) Then if it turns out the cam is OK - £100 possibly as the cams can wear out badly when not serviced right. Head possibly worth £100 too, bare. Also, you'll have a block and rods/crank etc.

Labour for fitting an engine is probably a good 8 hours+ of dedicated work. I have seen a mate of mine remove a complete engine from a fabia in 2 hours, but that situation was different due to the car being crashed. :D No care required generally.

  • Author

Hmm. Sounds not too bad when you say it... but is alot of work.

So looking about £400 for fitting?

Uhhh. Turning out to be an expensive fabia lol.

Will get it tested i guess then :)

Go and ask what? for a compression test?

Just repair it and enjoy it...

Im still a student haha.

Not exactly rolling in the money for engine changes :)
