Using 1l+ of oil every 400 - 500 miles?

Featured Replies

This seems to be neverending...

Had my MOT last wednesday in which they filled up my car with oil.

Checked it today to find nothing on the dipstick -.-

Ive had this problem since owning car and cant find an answer as to why im loosing so much oil.

I first got told it was the turbo seals... but could this really cause a full sump to go in 1 week? Also surely i would see tons of black smoke? I hardly see any smoke and it passed the MOT test for smoke fine...

Ive never seen a leak at all. Theres never been anything on the road etc where its parked... and never seen anything on engine tray...

Any ideas? Getting expensive filling up with £40 oil every week!

Is it possible it could only be leaking once moving maybe?

That's nearly 5L! Something's going BADLY wrong if that's true and there is genuinely NOTHING left in the sump after that length of time. You would expect to get warning lights and a LOT of smoke on the move, if you're sure it's not leaking when stationary.

You could try cleverly placed sheets of A4 paper around the engine bay and taking the car down the road and back if there's no obvious signs of leaks from the normal places?

I havent had any warning lights... except for the red flashing oil sign last month which first alerted me to the issue :'(

My aim is to get a white sheet and leave the running whilst its underneath.

See what that can find...

Noone seems to really know whats going on...

Well it has to be going somewhere. Put in simple terms!

Take engine undertray off and run the engine. Give it some revs and then observe for any outward signs of the oil leak. Any strange or mysterious noises? If it's not leaking but being burnt off then that will be evident out the back when the car's revved.

VCDS scan might be worthwhile, to see if ECU has logged anything amiss.

Engine tray is currently off and there was nothing on it.

But will do some more checks tomoz.

Has been scanned but only came back saying about the load signal wire...

iv never checked mine since ownership !

think i should,

could be a leaking sump plug ?

Pop a boost pipe off but tbh if a turbo was using that much oil it would by now have run on by itself and gone bang by now.

Turbo seals on the way out would result in *increased* oil usage, but not the whole bloody sump in that length of time! How many miles have you done between oil fill-up and now?

But with worn seals you'd notice increased turbo lag and a noticeable drop-off in performance compared with normal. Plus a fair bit of smoke. After all, the oil's being burned off so there has to be some by-product.

can't notice any decrease in perfrmance...

Where is the sumpplug?

Bottom of the engine, at the back of the rectangular box, pointing towards the back of the car ;)

thank haha.

Was under there today looking at load signal wire.didn't see unusual oil...

can i just point out the dipstick shows max and min and a little bit below, if its not showing on the dipstick it doesnt mean its empty !

its probably still got 2-3L of oil in there, but obviously still not as much as it should have in

if your undertray isnt full of oil id say your car must be burning it off somehow as its got to go somewhere

The dipstick showed it to be full. Then a week later nothing was on the dipstick at all.

Seems like a big loss still!

Im not too clued up on as to how the engine could burn so much.

Is there any phsyical signs of leaking turbo seals?

No puddles on the drive / where you park I assume? That could indicate a weepy oil feed/drain pipe, but you would not lose 2 litres a week that way.

No puddles :(

Got some time friday to try and do some more looking underneath and lay a sheet down.

Been told it might be an oil control ring on 1 or more of the pistons... pricey?

the difference between max and min is probably 1 to 1.5L

rings themselves aren't pricey. it's the labour of taking the engine out and dismantling/refitting of th ebottom end that ill cost you, plus new HG,bolts ect and if the cambelt is due ou may as well do that while you have to take it off anyway.

so yeah take the lube out for payment if it is the rings :(

Has the engine got the correct dip stick in ?

If not you may be filling to the indicated level which may be over filling it and it's throwing the surplus oil through the exhaust system thus damaging the Cat.

Just a thought.

Even then, 1l or so of oil in a week isn't good??

And how do I know If it's correct dipstick:)?

Compare your dip stick with one from another identical engined car.

DB.

Just a thought but are you checking the oil level with the car in the same place each time.

Parking the car slightly nose UP will compared to slightly nose DOWN will show different levels on the dipstick but the car will not have used oil.

Allways been done level.

Just found some sheets of that loft insulation polystyrene.

Have left it under the F/E and will check it later.

Been 2 hours and not a drop is leaking from the car itself as such :'(

No idea what now. Also had someone have a look when booting it and no sign of over smoking...

Grr

Noticed there is alot of stuff around my EGR... could this be causing anything?

Just going to check my CCV...
