4 Wheel Drive or 2 Wheel drive + Winter Tyres?

Featured Replies

I am interested as amidst all the posters with winter tyres I think you are the first I have read who has actually run on All Season tyres.

Hi,

CT17 and mbrock are both running all season; Goodyear Vector 4season and Nokian eNtyre respectively.

Regards,

TP

I am reading your post in a way that suggests you have found All Seasons are good enough in summer and genuinely better than summer tyres in winter and so worth the potential compromise. Would you agree with my reading of your post?

Yes, both pretty good in the summer and hugely better than summer tyres in the winter. Before buying I had read positive comments on various internet fora, (including from people in the north of England or in Scotland), so thought they'd be worth trying even tho' we live further south, and so far we're very pleased with them.

I would reiterate that you'd want to get all season tyres that are also suitable for winter use, so tyres that just have M+S may be optimised for mud and might not be as good on slippery winter surfaces.

I included the caveats as it may not be possible to find an all season tyre in the correct (or close enough) sizes. I checked the Vredestein Quatrac 3 sizes, and 215/60R16 99H XL is available which is, according to TP's guide, suitable for some (older?) 77 & 81kW engines, whereas the choice for 17" wheels is limited to 225/45R17 94V XL or 235/45R17 97V XL, neither of which is a factory fitted size although the latter is less than 3% smaller. However, take a look at TP's guide as he included information about all season tyres in the correct sizes.

Edited to add: I take the view that I want tyres to work well in the worst conditions I expect to meet, and that I can manage OK if they aren't quite as good in better conditions. The car that has winter tyres has summer tyres chosen for rain performance, (Goodyear Optigrip). The car with all season tyres was completely useless on summer tyres during much of the 2009/10 icy goodness.

I thought someone else was using them but I could not remember any posts recently giving direct experience with them on. In particular it was interesting to hear about an experience of someone who had used summer tyres in winter previously and was now running both winter and all season ones. The previous post that rubbished all season tyres threw me so this was good timing.

AnotherGareth - Excellent reply and much appreciated. I was going to start another thread on this issue but I think you have answered my query and put my mind to rest.

Riff wheel trims were RRP £23.17 + vat just over a year ago according to my recipt for a set.

Am I correct in reading this to mean the trims are £23.17 each, not per set?

I'm struggling to get VW T5 centre caps... I keep being outbid on eBay - my own fault I know! And I object to paying £50 odd for a set new from my local VW van agent!

Has anyone found any other steel wheel "centre trims" that fit, as distinct from a full wheel trim?

Apologies yes per wheel trim; pricey but good quality.

I was lazy and just bought those on 'buy it now' I paid about £20 delivered approx. I have ended up buying 2 sets, as 2 of the first set I bought were not a very good fit (broken slightly) and fell off. 1st one within 500 miles, the other after about 2000 miles.

The ones I have fitted at the moment all fit properly.

The wheels & tyres are a little dirtier now. This was taken at about 15miles old
