Octavia II What car small family car of the year

Featured Replies

well thats what the Skoda advert in the Telegraph says. :)

I've bought the last 2 issues of Drive, and they rate the Octavie very high too. Even better than the MK1.

In that case what is a large family car and how do you classify a Fabia?

I agree with the car of the year bit.

I was there..... (thanks to LozParry) and it did indeed win the award - to much cheering....

Got to admit I had the same thought. Small cars used to be things like the Mini - I expect you can probably park an original Mini in the back of the latest Octy...

I read somewhere that the current Polo (and presumably therefore the Fabia) is bigger than the Mk1 Golf.

Thanks for that link, Steviec

from the what car video clip i realise how common my pronunciation of 'octavia' is.

it's octaaaaarvia not octayvia. oh well. well done skoda anyway :D

I'd have said "Oct ay via" too.

BTW does anyone know what's the official pronunciation of "Fabia"?

Is it "Fay bee a", "Fab ee a", "Faaaaarb ee a", or something else?

What Car dropped through the letter box this morning, comes with a DVD of all the winners. They show you all the winning cars etc viewed the Octy one and whilst in the 1.6 FSi Ambiente that won. The car they show you over is a fully spec'd up TDi Elegance Model, Leather trim the lot.

Interesting they refer to VW as the sister company, rather than the parent company too.

In the article it says that ... "In fact, the Octavia's generous proportions give it more interior space than many cars from the class above, plus a huge boot."

The class above is the Family Car (Toyota Avensis). They are using exterior dimensions for the comparison to the Small Family Car catagory. So the Octavia is in my opinion the best of both worlds

I'm sorry if this has come up before (I'm new) but it annoys me how the press constantly class the Octavia as a Small car just because it's based alledgedly on the Golf. The car is huge, especially the estate, just an inch or two short of the massive new mondeo and vectra surely?

It seems to me the Octavia is a much closer match to the Passat (the old passat looked practically identical to the old octavia) than the Golf . Meanwhile the Fabia is all but the size of the Golf and I would classify that as a small family car. Skoda seem to sit back and let this happen...

The old one had bad rear legroom so the fairest comparison was to the Bora rather than the Passat , but the new one is much better and is certainly closer to mundaneo sized cars than golfs

but the superb = passat..

the octy is based on the golf/a3... it is a small car... big for its class... but still small compared with mondeo/vextra/passat/a4.

do you think the A3 is a large car?

No I don't think the A3 and the golf are large cars but neither are they small cars! The octavia on the other hand is definately a large car in my mind. I mean it's well over a foot longer than the A3! And with the seats up the Octavia has the same boot space as a Mondeo. My folks had a mondeo before, they were going to get another but went for the Skoda. There's no difference in size apart from the rear legroom maybe!

It is. I'm sad enough to have looked it up. It's easy to find the info as the original Golf is still made (with the Fabia dashboard) in South Africa.

There is a CitiGolf near me that obviously found it's way from S.A.

Caught me out the first time I saw it on a recent number plate
