Grinding driver's door electric window

Featured Replies

Some help needed...

The electric window on the driver's door of a mk2 Octavia is making a grinding noise and not opening / closing.

Have been trying to strip the trim off the inside of the door to see what the problem might be. The window motor runs, but sounds like cogs are eating eachother.

So far have managed to remove the inside chrome door handle and screw behind. Removed the two screws on the bottom of the plastic door trim (below the bottle holder). Pulled off the grab handle (which has the window switches) and removed three large screws and one small from behind. But still not able to get the trim off the door.

Does anyone know what the fault might be with the window and how to resolve. Or failing that, how to get access to see what is going on. i.e. what screws are still in place holding the door trim on?

Thanks

Sounds like you have most of the screws off, I'm sitting in the house, but from memory, there is a screw behind the small speaker housing foreward of the door handle.

The door trim is also held by a series of plastic clips around the edge, start at a lower corner and use a screwdriver or preferably a flat plate to force the trim away from the door. I sometimes use cardboard or an old credit card to protect the paint from damage from the screwdriver. Work around the bottom and sides, some of the clips may break but they're cheap to replace. Don't forget to remove the wiring to the door light, speaker, etc. A helping hand is useful to hold the trim whilst disconnecting wiring plugs.

This is only part of the job, on my car the whole assembly is riveted to the door and the window has to be disconnected from this assembly before removing it. My problem didn't require me to go as far as this, good luck with it. It may be better to go to an expert, all VAG cars give some bother in this respect and are similar.

If it's a10 plate surely its a warranty job. If you damage the door etc and then have to take it to dealer I am sure they will disclaim the warranty.

Thanks for the help with this.

According to the garage, the window regulator cannot be changed without changing the entire unit inside the door (i.e. everything comes attached to a metal frame). This is very expensive, and seems to be the most likely cause of the window not working, but making grinding noises.

Btw – the fault isn't with the VRS – as you say, if it were then I would take the car to a Skoda dealer for them to sort. This Octy is out of warranty now.

Once you get the door card off, and have obtained a replacement from the scrappy's, drill the rivets out and remove the regulator, refit the replacement and re rivet
