Wheel trims dangerous in snow?

Featured Replies

I have just fitted winter tyres to my VRS. They came from my dealer on hideous black steel wheels.

I was going to buy wheel trims to improve the looks but my dealer warned me off, saying that driving in deep snow with wheel trims could be dangerous.

This wouldn't have occurred to me but I have held off buying some. Does any one have experience or knowledge of what problems could arise?

The weight of the snow getting caught behind the plastic trims can cause them to pop off. At speed this could be dangerous, but no worse than dropping down a pothole.

Also any trapped snow may also throw off the balance of the wheel which could affect your steering and the cars handling?

I wouldn't worry, saying that aren't the trims around £50 each? For a few months use I'd be tempted to save the £200 and make do with black steelies...

.. plus you may have the issue of snow getting trapped between the wheel and trim thus blocking the flow of air to cool the brakes.

Oh perleeease!

Exactly how fast are you going to be going in snow to risk over-heating the brakes?!

seriously? - and the open side of the wheel on the inside wouldn't cool the brakes more than enough even if they did get any serious heat in them?

Hahaha, come on, where did he fell from? Mars or even somewhere further? :)

We are legally obliged to fit finter tyres in most of our country (from Nov 15th till Mar 15th, except the coastal region). There are thousands of cars having wheel trims and so far I haven't heard about any problem concerning them.

And what's more - how many times are you planning to drive in a deep snow? 10-20 centimetres of snow are far from deep...

Oh man, that's a good one. Snow - frozen water - blocking cooling.
