2000 1.4MPi Shuddering.

Featured Replies

Its been a while since I was on the forum and I was wondering if anyone ever managed to solve the 1.4 8v shuddering problems?

My girlfriend has one, I replaced the timing chain a while back as it was seriously annoying me, that helped but its still shuddering and seems lacking on power. Plugs, coilpack etc all been changed recently, had oil and filter with the cam chain too (less than 6k ago).

its covered 133,000 miles, so its not a young engine by any stretch of the imagination.

Any advice welcomed.

Dave.

Shaking at idle is normal as the idle is kept low to meet emissions legislation. Shuddering while being driven would be a cause for concern.

Apparently many timing chains supplied by Skoda have the timing marks incorrectly made. See http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/131845-idle-power-problem-14-mpi/

Whereabouts are you? It may be worthwhile getting VCDS plugged into it to check for any fault codes, and possibly to browse through the measuring blocks and compare the results with the official Skoda service manual.

Hi Anewman,

It doesn't shudder while driving so much, although the power delivery isn't smooth, quite 'lumpy' until the engine is doing a couple of thousand RPM.

I've heard about the dodgy timing marks so I checked the chain against the old one, complete with sprockets, everything lined up tooth for tooth so unless the original (which was baggier than a wellie-top) was wrong to begin with then I dont think its going to be this thats at fault.

I'm in the northeast, Blyth to be precise. I have a Vag-Com interface and the free version of Vag-Com to play with, although I'm not familiar with how to drive it so I honestly dont know what i'd be looking for.

Thanks, Dave.

If you have managed to get Vag-com and the car to "talk" then in vag-com hit "select control module" top left, then "01 - Engine". Then all the text at the top will take a second or two to appear, then select "Fault Codes" again top left. Save the codes, clear them, hit done go back and exit. I think the free version should allow you to do this but will only decode the first fault code, which might be all you need. Once you have cleared the codes, if you scan again to see if any codes recur after driving a bit.
