Broken rear coil spring

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, just looking for a bit of help in changing the rear coil springs on my 03 1.9TDi estate. it failed the MOT today because the tail of one of the rear springs has broken off. I have already obtained new springs and was looking to do the job tomorrow morning.

1. Do I really require coil spring compressors or can I get away without them.

2. Where would be the safest place to jack and to place axel stands bearing in mind the axel will need to be lowered and then pumped back up with the same trolley jack.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

- No you do not need coil spring compressors.

-I guess you are changing both sides as you really need to fit the springs in pairs. So you should jack up the car from the jacking points at the rear just in front of the wishbone bushes. You can either place axle stands on the places on the rear chassis or using wooden blocks with grooves in that you can carefully place on the rear sills.

I have axle stands that have the groove's in them that the octy sill fits in snug and is perfect for this job.

Buy jacking up both sides you can lower the rear beam wishbones equally and make removing springs easier.

To lower the Beam wishbones remove the lower rear shock bolts/nuts and then keep an eye on the rear brake lines. I managed to lower the wishbones to get out the springs without removing any brake lines.

I also replaced the lower shock nuts and bolts but not absolutley needed.

good luck

Thanks very much for the info especially the pics, did the job yesterday morning, completed in an hour for both springs. Was then able to get get my car re-tested and now able to tax the car.

Thanks once again for the info

Cheers !
